Frist Hopes to Change Filibuster Rules by Keith Peters, Washington, D.C., correspondent Senate majority leader wants to lower the number of votes needed to stop Democratic blockade of President Bush's judicial nominees. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist has had enough of his Democratic colleagues filibustering conservative judicial nominees so he has plans to make breaking those filibusters easier. Frist wants to do it by changing Senate rules governing the number of votes needed to override a filibuster. His attempt to do it through a Senate resolution is co-sponsored by Sen. Zell Miller, D-Ga. "It would end the filibuster as applied to the president's nominations," explained Manuel Miranda, a Frist aide. "On the first vote there would be the 60 votes that we have now, and then it would escalate downward so that at the end . . . a simple majority would be able to do what the Constitution calls upon senators to do have an honest, fair up-or-down vote." Attorney Deanna Mool of the Republican National Lawyers Association said Democrats have applied a litmus test to judicial nominees by blocking Miguel Estrada, Priscilla Owen and Bill Pryor. "If the Democrats don't like the view of the appointee on certain issues, they just say, 'You know what? We're not going to allow a vote on this guy or woman and we don't have to seat them.' It's just wrong." Miranda said he thinks most people understand how wrong it is, which is why he predicts success for the Republicans. "I think the American people are becoming very aware and sensitized to the issue of the judiciary, the importance of the judiciary and how bad it can be when the judiciary goes awry," he said. |

I sent my wishes to Senators Shelby and Sessions. Told them to actively participate. Surely the Republicans realize what laughing stocks the Democrats are making of them

I'm in the same boat with Nelson and Graham of Flori-duh. But, I've previously emailed them anyway. I've also emailed most of the Dims and some Repubs on the Judicial Committee. I call 1-800-648-3516, the US Capitol switchboard, to get connected to the Senators offices. Email and call even though they're not your Senator.
To: Dolphy
My condolences on Levin being your Senator. I especially dislike him. This morning he was on Fox News with Tony Snow talking about the disgraceful Dim memo re use of intelligence against the Pres. Snow failed to ask Levin why he's spending our tax dollars on an intelligence investigation when the Dims have predetermined the outcome.
To: MeeknMing
Thanks Ming, both for the ping and the easy way to write to my senators. I have emailed them both, and will be calling in the morning.

While you're at it, tell Orrin Hatch we don't support his efforts to allow naturalized citizens to become President of the United States nor do we support giving education GRANTS to children of illegal immigrants.

I don't think I will vote for Kay Bailey ever again, unless she shows a change toward protecting human rights. And remembers the 11th commandment. And answers my letters in such a way that makes me believe that *someone* actually read them.
I'm hoping I can remember the 11th, myself, next weekend when she speaks at the Texas Federation of Republican Women.
