Group out to preserve land in Collier County (no-growth Nazis)

Fighting to keep EcoGroup from building a tall condo by Wiggins Pass is just the beginning of a local group’s battle to preserve land in northwestern Collier County.

North Bay Civic Association plans to embark on new territory in Collier County. It wants to be the first civic group to fight for an area to become a Natural Resource Protection Area, also known as NRPA.

The group is asking the county to designate wetlands and adjacent uplands that stretch four miles along the northwestern-most coast of Collier County as a NRPA.

A NRPA is part of the county’s comprehensive growth plan. The goal of NRPA is to protect endangered or potentially endangered species and to keep large connected pieces of land intact to keep habitats unfragmented.

“That right there is the gem of the county, and it’s at risk of being destroyed,” said Doug Fee, head of North Bay Civic Association. “This 10 acres (EcoGroup) is only the symptom. It’s the whole area we need to preserve. We will get beyond the marina issue. This is pristine. We need to preserve this.”

Collier County has several other NRPA’s including:

• The Clam Bay conservation area

• South Belle Meade

• CREW land

• South Golden Gate Estates

• North Belle Meade

Except for Clam Bay, all the rest are large rural tracts of land.

Bill Lorenz, Collier County’s Environmental Services Director, said the county has always selected NRPAs, so his department will have to devise a plan for how local organizations can identify and petition for one.

“This hasn’t been done before,” Lorenz said. “Other NRPAs were driven by government, not by the people. We’re on new ground. I’m not sure what the process is. We have to figure out what that process will be.”

Lorenz said making an area an NRPA would require a growth management plan amendment. The county needs to figure out if the amendment would be presented and sponsored by a citizens group or by Collier County.

“It’s a very intriguing concept,” Lorenz said. “We are definitely interested in pursuing to see how we would handle this.”

Nancy Peyton, Southwest Florida field representative for the Florida Wildlife Federation, says her group supports North Bay’s plan.

“Florida Wildlife will help in any way we can,” Peyton said. “We have for years promoted these natural resource protection areas. We’re committed to the concept of NRPAs. I commend North Bay for being ahead of the curve and setting an example for other organizations that want their natural areas protected.”

Peyton said the proposal will also be unique because of the area the group wants to protect. While the land that runs just west of Vanderbilt Drive is similar to the Clam Bay NRPA, it’s nothing like any of the other NRPAs.

These idiots are responsible for some of the worst legislation my area has seen. No tactic is out of bounds in their selfish quest to keep everyone (after they themselves have settled in) from moving to their retirement haven.

Their motto is "we moved here but you can't". Now they're trying to use envro commie laws to suit their purposes.

Because of these idiots, we're spending 20 grand on a new home before you even put a shovel in the ground.

Exactly. They don't want to buy anything, they want everyone else to pay for the quality of their retirement.

It should be noted that I've never met one of these people that are Florida natives. In fact most have just come here recently.

One of the sad things about the no growth movement is that it also attracts conservatives. There's a saying I've heard at planning commission meetings, "the newest environmentalists is the last guy to build a house."

If there is value in open land, (and I think there is), it should be purchased and maintained by a private for-profit company that charges admission for its use.

Ah, memories of fighting those same types here in Hunterdon Country.

They managed to stop building for nearly ten years......but now the building is finally going on!

What the heck, let's just cover the whole place with concrete and asphalt and make it look very pretty and the no-growth issue will be dead.

I'm always intrigued by no-growthers who won't discuss population control. They won't admit that limiting birth--forcing abortion, sterilizing the third world--is the true agenda. No growth is really a kind of thorough-going misanthropy: it's an equal opportunity hater of human beings.

They're up North too. The thing is that many of those have are at least able to claim "native" status or are from the area.

This breed down here moves in and immediately sets about ensuring that nobody else does.

At one time I thought that might be ok too, but it's not. Eoo freak clubs such as The Nature Conservancy, use lots of advertising dollars that they dupe the public(the uneducated ma and pa kettle and anyone else they can lie to about "protecting the environment") out of with slick ads. As non-profits (and voices as NGO's), they have locked up more of America, than you may want to know about,(in Oregon they have more than 55,000 acres, better check your state).

What are they doing with the land you ask? Try reading about the wild lands projects, and the re-wilding of America. Then read U.N agenda 21 (sustained growth...) They want to turn this country upside down! All freepers should take a hard look at the attack the far left is waging on our country as we know it.

There are lots of great groups out there mobiling against the idiots. AAABEST is in your region, he can probably suggest a group in your region. Get with them and do more than donate money, donate time too. What your fighting for is America.

NRPA? Sounds like a great plan, we wouldn’t want malaria and West Nile virus to end up on the endangered species list. We have to make sure the mosquito remains our State bird don’t we?

I’m in need of a toe jam scraping you think anyone over there could accommodate me while they remain in the correct position?

I believe that the eco-extremist conflagration in California is already changing the minds of a lot of Sierra Club-type contributors.

Same thing down here in North Carolina the Northern snow birds migrate from down New York and used to back up to the North in the spring. Well, one problem developed, they decided to stay instead of going back North.
I don’t mean to pick on New Yorkers, but the cost of living in New York is way higher than it is here in the South and these people are more in likely retired civil servants, or receiving pensions from high paying jobs in New York.
They retire here in North Carolina with wads of cash and drive up the real estate market and start imposing new zoning laws.
Emerald Isle North Carolina is turning into a particularly Tony part of the beach that used to be accessed by all. Well through the years beach access has literally disappeared for those who don’t own ocean front property. If one wants to go to the beach they have to hoof it from an area of limited parking. These snow birds have somehow removed the beach access and parking and basically channeled the unwashed masses to a particular stretch of beach away from the ocean front homes.
One particular home owner did use the term,” Unwashed masses.” When the general public does come visit the beach. The Army Corps of Engineers states,” That before any beach improvements will be made; there will have to be a beach access and parking every half mile.”
Ohhhh, ya should have heard the row one beach home owners let out a collective wail. So these beach home owners went and hired a big time lawyer to see if the home owners who wanted beach improvements at others tax payer expense, but still get around or do away entirely with the Army Corps of Engineers rule of access and parking every half mile.
Another area of North Carolina were the Navy wants to build a training airfield, the snow birds that moved in there are bringing every Environmental big gun that they can think of to try and stop this project that would bring 1500 additional jobs to the area. This particular area is poorer than dirt, and these jobs would be a great benefit to an area with no jobs. But, the snow bird attitude is,”Hey I got mine, but I don’t want you to have yours.”
A local can spot them from a mile a way with their Greg Norman his and hers matching straw hats and their nautical themed ensembles.
The big excuse for the air field is, it would scare the birds and make to much noise.
My advise to the snow birds is, you have yours, let me least have a fighting chance and getting mine, and if ya don’t like it, move your ass back up North. You have ruined your Northern State with too many rules don’t ruin this one.
