NEW HAVEN A grand jury in U.S. District Court has indicted a 37-year-old El Salvador man with a long arrest record on charges of re-entering the country illegally, according to the U.S. attorneys office.
Carlos Alberto Calderon-Moran, of 1030 Hancock Road, Bridgeport, was arrested by Stratford police on Sept. 10 after he allegedly punched a co-worker, authorities said.
Police turned the case over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office under the Department of Homeland Security after police discovered Calderon-Moran was deported from California back to El Salvador on March 17, 2003, after being convicted on drug and assault charges in January.
Calderon-Moran, who has served time in California on charges of manslaughter and drug possession, has been deported three times since 1984, said Tom Carson, spokesman for the U.S. attorneys office.
He was last deported after being convicted on the drug and assault charges but "somehow he made his way to Connecticut," Carson said.
If convicted, Calderon-Moran faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
"This case demonstrates this offices commitment to prosecuting serious immigration violations," said U.S. Attorney Kevin J. OConnor.
Carson said cooperation with local police departments is crucial in any investigation, and played a key role in Calderon-Morans case.
"The local police are the ones that wind up catching these guys," Carson said.
Stratford police Capt. Harvey Maxwell said his department always checks on a suspects background with several agencies, including Immigration.
Calderon-Moran gave police a false name upon his arrest, Maxwell said. The alias, however, was contained in information provided by the immigration agency, he said.
"It is these connections that result in the apprehension of individuals who otherwise may have gone unnoticed," Maxwell said

What's really sad is that this is a headline -- since it's so rare that the immigration laws are enforced, even in the case of violent criminals.
To: raybbr
The sad part about this is that you know he's just going to come walking back here.
I think if we'd brand illegal with a big I on one cheek and an A on the other, it would serve not only as a deterrent, but it would make them a lot easier to spot for the INS.

"Calderon-Moran was deported from California back to El Salvador on March 17, 2003, after being convicted on drug and assault charges in January."
Our local INS agent says that Central and South American illegal aliens are sent back on commercial flights at U.S. taxpayer expense. In some cases, an INS agent accompanies the deportee. I would assume that all these travel costs come out of the INS budget which could be better spent by hiring more agents.

Oops, never mind.
"This case demonstrates this offices commitment to prosecuting serious immigration violations," said U.S. Attorney Kevin J. OConnor.
For non-serious immigration violations, O'Conner added, "We just look the other way."
"The local police are the ones that wind up catching these guys," Carson said.
Yeppers, God forbid the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office mentioned above that we're all paying through the nose for do any real, meaningful work.

"somehow he made his way to Connecticut," SOMEHOW?? No surprise. That's what happens on a daily basis with the revolving door George Bush has allowed at the Mexican border to accommodate his buddy Vicente Fox.

I don't want taxes to go towards keeping this goon in prison for 20 years. He's obviously not worth a damn, lets just execute him and be done with it.
And you know what, while we're at it let's just execute all of the goons, thugs, rapists, and murderers in our prisons now. Most of them are repeat offenders, of their own choosing refusing to exercise self-control.
I've freeking had it with all the coddling of criminals that goes on WORLDWIDE not just in America.
There's a lot to be said for caning and execution.

after he allegedly punched a co-workerNot too bright --- he's here illegally, has a long crime record and he goes and punches a co-worker? Not a good way to be when you should be laying low ---- avoiding police problems.

There are 10's of thousands, if not 100's of thousands of illegal alien, career criminals running around and we caught one by accident.
We're going to spend $1 million dollars or more to prosecute and incarcerate him as if he was an American citizen. Whoopee!
In the spirit of diversity and multiculturalism, I say we adopt the Chinese custom of putting an inexpensive, .22 cal bullet in this miscreant's brain.
That would be thrifty and a meaningful diplomatic gesture to the Chinese at the same time. That's one of those win-win scenarios State Department weenies are always looking for.
