Dig that graphic! I'm keeping that one for future CBS Schadenfreude stories.

"I think it is the lowest day in the history of CBS," said Neal Gabler, ... That kind of statement just gives joy to my heart, and hope for the future.

I'd like to read what Ms. Traister had to say when Dr. Laura was forced off the air.

"I think it is the lowest day in the history of CBS," said Neal Gabler, a senior fellow at the Lear Center for the Study of Entertainment at the University of Southern California. *This* is the lowest day in the history of CBS? Lower than when CBS ran shows like Baby Bob, AfterMASH, and One Day at a Time? Worse than when Dan Rather stormed off the air because a tennis match ran late? Worse that when Charles Kuralt was found to have a mistress in Montana? Geez, this Gabler guy's an idiot!

I'd like to read what Ms. Traister had to say when Dr. Laura was forced off the air. ...or Michael Savage's show being cancelled, or Rush Limbaugh's gig as a football commentator going to "resign or we fire you" status -- both because of the same kind of "we don't want controversy" decisions as was involved in the decision to not air "The Reagans" on CBS...
So what's the claim about the CBS action being "unprecedented"? It's not even unprecedented in the past few months...
To: Timesink
"If they didn't want to make this film to begin with, that's one thing. But to pull something off the air based on the protests of a minuscule number of people? They should have put this thing on once it was made come hell or high water."
LOL! I guess these people desperately want to believe the TV triopoly is still alive and well.
CBS could shove trash down our throats before, because who else were we going to go to? ABC? NBC?
No doubt if CBS was still guaranteed 1/3 of the viewership regardless of what they did, "The Reagans" would have aired.
And since CBS is running a business and not a charity like Salon.com, they've had to put money and existence ahead of liberal propaganda.

." "The case that I made was that if Walter Cronkite could be against the war on the news at 6, then why couldn't we at 8 or 8:30?" he recalled. "And CBS was very, very brave. They were politically permissive. They encouraged us and they were not afraid."
They were so bwave, so wery, wery, bwave.

You can see that Salon et al want to attribute all this to the cabal of FoxNews (who pays Neal Gabler to be a news media analyst on the Fox News Watch show on Saturdays) and Media Research Center and Drudge... They neglect the spontaneous organizing on the internet of protests (NoMoreCBS.com and BoycottCBS.com) that reflects the great change since the 1970's and 1980's: the audience isn't just spoonfed anymore -- they participate and respond. Without the internet, this story doesn't move and people have no where to turn to protest. They did CBS the great favor of WARNING what the reaction would be... CBS is LUCKY they pulled this piece of cr*p off the air because they would have been racked by lousy ratings and protests of sponsors.
The genie is out of the bottle and it ain't going back in!

"In a free society what we generally do is we allow people to put things on the air that we may even find offensive and then we let people discuss and debate."
Uh huh. You mean like, gun commercials? Cigarette ads? How about a real negative biography of Jesse Jackson's life? Or Al Sharpton's? HOW ABOUT MAKING THE FIRST NEGATIVE HOLLYWOOD MOVIE ABOUT STALIN OR CHAIRMAN MAO IN 70 YEARS?! How about a truly biased-AGAINST discussion of abortion for the first time in three decades? How about a negative, offensive discussion of Islam? How about showing Mel Gibson's Passion on ABC, since we just showed a complete whackjob conspiracy theory revolving around Jesus being -married-?
Hypocrite! Grrrrr!
