Affirmative Action Bake Sale at Indiana University
The Hoosier Review ^ | 11-4-03 | Zach Wendling

Posted on 11/04/2003 2:38:11 PM PST by Rush Reagan

Yum! Cookies Well, it's finally come to IU. The Committee for Freedom will be holding an Affirmative Action Bakesale tomorrow, Wednesday, November 4th in Dunn Meadow from 12:30 pm until 2:00 pm. According to the press release, "Cookies will be sold at different prices based on race and gender. White males will pay $1 per cookie, white females will pay 75 cents, Hispanics will pay 50 cents, and cookies will cost 25 cents for blacks."

Stephan Jerabek, President of The Committee for Freedom, said, "Through this bake sale, we hope to highlight the absurdity of preferences based on race, ethnicity, or gender." Bakesale patrons will also be given the chance to sign a petition calling on IU to change university policy to prohibit the collection of racial data.

As a side note here guys there is probably going to be a huge backlash on campus from this. Any support you Freepers can give us in terms of letters to the editor or anything else will be greatly appreciated. I will post a message after the bakesale to tell you guys how to respond if you want.

there is no such thing as government pricing discrimination in the market (that I am aware of anyway).

Actually, I retract that thought....we have government subsidies for a whole host of things.....

Rest of my point still stands.....

Ever since these bakesales have been occurring, I have been considering a spinoff of the idea: the Reparations Bakesale.

Cookie prices:

$10 if you are, or ever were, a slavemaster

$5 if you are white, or even look like you have entertained the idea of having a slave

$.50 if you are of a minority group that are not claiming reparation

$.25 for any black person that came here after the Civil War (or the Civil Rights Act) and wants a piece of the action

$.15 to any black person that may have had a relative that might have been a slave or known one

Free to any current slaves or any living former slaves.

I am sure this could be fine tuned, but it would make an excellent point: nobody should be getting charged $10 or getting free cookies, and they are the only ones that arguably deserve to be in the reparations discussion.

Might want to drop a line to The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE: http://www.thefire.org/index.php).

Give them a heads-up, as they fight over-zealous administrators and leftist-loonies.

Be sure to tape the day, as truth is only as real as your accredited victim/minority status---though many times truth is no defense as far as leftisit administrators are concerned.

"The 'statements' of the UW College Republicans in putting on a bake sale about affirmative action were tasteless, divisive and hurtful to many members of the University community," wrote Jerry Grinstein, President of the Board of Regents.

So is Affirmative Action, you clod. That was the point!

The bake sale idea was sorta funny when Rush first came up with it (but definitely not his funniest bit). Now it's lost its originality, and "demonstrating absurdity by being absurd" still leaves you looking, well, absurd. As Rush always says: "don't try this at home, folks".

Problem is, the approach taken by bake-sale organizers doesn't make the going easier. Such tactics divide the campus community and fail to bring people together to talk about a thorny issue.

People have a right to freedom of speech, but it has to be done "the right way," so as not to "divide people." Yeah, right. Why doesn't he just come out and honestly say, he doesn't believe in FA rights for conservatives? Because that would be less effective than equivocation and double-talk.

I disagree. Public universities are still engaging in affirmative action, even when it violates state laws. As long as AA reigns, and students cannot challenge it in the classroom, we need bake sales. Or are you saying that AA may not be challenged? Or just not in a "tasteless, divisive" fashion? One of the laws of ethics is, "If you desire the ends, you desire the means." Since bake sales are often the only means for challenging AA on campus, you are saying that you oppose any challenge to AA.

Welcome to FR, RR.

These bake sales are great. I'm just waiting to see a black conservative capitalist student booth set up next to the bake sale.

An enterprising student could make a fortune and teach something about capitalism as well. :)

Five current Winston Cup drivers are Hoosiers (Newman, Stewart, Gordon, Andretti, Raines) with one more on the way (Shelby Howard, Greenwood, signs a develpment deal with Bill Davis Racing). Any serious stock car driver who wants to make the big time has prove himself at Salem and Winchester tracks.

Two thoughts:

Why would "enlightened liberals" be upset by this bake sale? The point of the sale is that in the past, people received different treatment based on skin color, ala "Jim Crow" laws and the segregated South. Isn't this bake sale a way to point out these evils?

Do you remember a school teacher named ?Jane Elliott?, and her experiment "Blue Eyes Brown Eyes"? What would she say about this bake sale?

Where you list the prices, be sure and use the word "Whitey" or "Honkey." I just think it's funny.

If this were happening near me and I wanted to counter-protest, or better yet, make some money for CR, I'd open a booth right next to them selling cookies for $1 each and have a big sign that says "NOT THE COLLEGE REPUBLICANS."

Then at the end of the day, after all the libs bought 'protest cookies,' I'd give the $$ to CR. :)
