"Order by post time" rocks. "Order by relevance" sucks.

Does anyone actually prefer the "order by relevance" default on the FR search feature?

It is VERY annoying when doing searches. I can't think of a single time that I found the default "relevance" function to be preferable to the "time" option.

Would it be terribly difficult to:

(1) Change it globally in the FR software, or, (2) Allow the "time" option in personal preferences?

This would be the first year that I will not be drinking that Beaujeolis "Noveau" at Thanksgiving. I used to look forward to this time of year when that wine would come out. It was cheap enough to buy in bulk and I would get a case or two to have around the house at Thanksgiving. Guests could visit and drink the wine at little expense to me. The wine was very drinkable and the colors on the labels were very bright and cheerful.

However, this will be the first Thanksgiving of my French wine boycott. My wine rack has been totally given over to wines from California, Australia, Spain, Italy and other places around the globe. SO this will be a different kind of Thanksgiving.

I prefer Swiss cheese to hard cheddar. But Swiss cheese does not necessarily mean imported from Switzerland. Wisconsin and other American places make a good swiss cheese. Smoked Gouda is pretty good cheese as well. I like having that with a slab of dry sausage.

One thing that bothers me about getting a haircut these days is that they always ask you how you want it. Why I want my hair cut, how else do you think I want it? I do not understand the question. I'm just a simple guy. My hair grows for a couple of months and then I need it cut back because it starts looking shaggy. I simply want my hair cut shorter. Then they have also taken to ask you if you want "scissors or shears." I do not understand this question either. What does it matter what implement is used to cut my hair? I just want my hair cut shorter. I also deplore the "unisex" places like SuperCuts where you get nothing but gum-snapping teenage girls yapping about boyfriends and rap music being played over the stereo. I prefer going to a man's barber shop. But they are disappearing so quickly as the old-time barbers are retiring and going out of business. The barber shop I used to go to was staffed by a couple of 70-something guys who always gave a decent haircut. I was shocked to see that it had literally overnight turned into a tropical fish/pet store. Now that was de-pressing.

the endless war between subjective and objective - not much wiggle room with "post time"

I see by your profile you have a 9 year old son.
I have a 9 year old grandson.
Listening to a 9 year old blame passing is much more fun this time around.

My son deserves it...hehe.

It's been raining here for the last couple days. On top of that, we have plenty of trees and the leaves have been clogging the gutters. So, every couple hours, we have to take the ladder out and clean the gutters in the pouring rain. It could be even more dangerous if it was lightning out. I remember apartment living, no cares in the world. Have you tried gutter helmet?

The last time I went to Burger King, I wanted a small coke, not one of those huge ones. So, I asked them to substitute a small for the large. They charged me instead of the value meal price, individual item prices, which was $1.50 more than the value meal, all because I wanted a small coke. On top of that, I went through the drive up window. And this is the exact conversation I had with the employee:

Hi gfhdls King, sdjkldf fhdls hteos buzzzzzz order?

I'll have a number 3 value meal with a small coke.

That whjkfdashia ierntsa bjiowern please drive dnklfahjksdfa.

What was most annoying was the woman in the mini van just ahead of me in the drive up line who must have ordered 63 meals, scrounged around the van for change, decided that the order needs modification, and at the last minute changed her order. And I really miss napkins. Is there a planned shortage of napkins being supplied to fast food places? Is this a way for 'them' to subliminally tell us we shouldn't be patronizing fast food restaurants?

Can potatoes see?

I'm positive people do not realize this is a feature of the search engine. Each time I've seen a duplicate post, I've searched for the FULL title and found the first posting of the thread almost always as the first result.

If one does a search for "DoD News Briefing - Secretary Rumsfeld and Gen. Myers" their are multiple hits and the latest briefing [10/02/03] does not show up until the 20th entry.

My parents live two miles from the airport in Minneapolis. When I was a kid the planes flew directly over our house and they were so low you could see the people inside. They were so loud. We just learned to stop talking whenever a plane went overhead, which was about every twelve minutes. I once tried to throw a rock at one of the planes, but I was only eight years old and I missed.

Why does toothpaste taste so terrible after drinking orange juice?

I've worn glasses since I was ten years old. When no one is looking, I like to take them off and smell the ear pads. Its really gross.

"We need Ann Coulter pop-ups."

Hmmm I was under the impression we already had them because every time I see a picture of Ann Coulter well I get...

Ahhh, never mind.

I agree with the haircut thing, but what really bums me out is the recycling in my town. They demand you recycle stuff, but won't print out a list of what is acceptable for recycling. The recyclers come about an hour after the trash guys, so whatever they decide to leave the bright green sticker on, i have to hang on to for another week. They take the clear glass, but not the brown. They take the corrugated cardboard most weeks, other times they dont. They dont ususally take the cereal box cardboard, but not pizza boxes. they take the milk jugs, as long as they are cloudy, not the white ones like the hood milk comes in. they also take some kinds oh #2 hdpe, but no PETE or other plaStics. they will take the soda bottles because there is a deposit, but not water bottles i am confused as the dickens, and have tried a dozen times to explain the differences in what is recyclable and not that i have given up, so then the recycling commission sent us a letter complaining that we are nto recycling enough of our waste material. I asked them if the paper they used to write the letter was 100% post consumer content and they said no, so i asked them if they would be offended if i threw it away and they said yes, so i did. The real funny thing is my house is right on the town line, and my neighbors in the next town can put anything they weant in the recycling bin and the guys take it. OH, yeah, the relevance thing sucks, btw

We've been getting the rains here in New England too and it's also raining leaves. I did try gutter helmet and other gutter solutions and none of them work. Stuff like sediment, pine needles and even acorns always manages to get down in your gutters and clog up the downspouts. And you won't find anybody to clean your gutters with those contraptions in place. So I ripped all of that stuff off and just deal with cleaning them out manually twice a year. I wouldn't bother cleaning them this time of year though. Wait for all the leaves to fall and then get up there. I hate drive-throughs because it seems that the person in front of me always has a van-full of kids and a very complicated order that takes about 10 minutes to fill. This even happens inside the restaurant too. For example, I was at Dunkin' Donuts last week and some old granny type with two grandkids tugging at her sleeves was ordering donuts and munchkins and muffins and on and on. It seemed she was ordering for the entire block she lived on. Then she had to get 12 coffees made 12 different ways. After all that, the flustered cashier finally got the order straight and run up the price. When she gave the woman the price, the woman acted as though she was surprised to find that she was expected to pay money for the order. So now, after 10 minutes of having her order filled, she decided to open her purse and start fishing around for her wallet - which, of course, she can't find right away. With trembling hands, she finally gains her wallet and before you know it, there is change rolling all over the counter and onto the floor. Nickels, dimes and pennies mostly. Of course, this isn't going to pay for the huge order so she continues to fish around in the wallet for some currency. After about three additional minutes of shuffling around a bunch of bills (mostly ones and fives), the order is paid for and now she has to gather up the entire order herself and lug it to the car while her two spoiled grandkids are munching on a donut and not helping to carry out the order at all. I finally get to the counter and order "Medium coffee, cream, no sugar." I pay exact change, leave a 50 cent tip and I'm out of there in 15 seconds, and pulling out of the parking lot while the lady I had to spend 15 minutes waiting behind is still trying to get into her car without spilling anything, and her grandkids lunging for another donut.

Interesting about the napkins. I happen to know on good authority that fast food chains purposely make it difficult to locate extra napkins, straws, etc. They really don't want you to have them as it cuts into their thin margins. Instead, their counter staff is instructed to place the bare minimum of napkins in the bags themselves so that the customer doesn't have to grab a handful on the way out the door.

Order by time should be the default. Or the default should be something you can set on your configuration page.

We live out in the country and have to go to the 'dump'. They have seperate bins for stuff like newspapers, beer boxes, bottles, cans, pizza boxes, and soda cans. I believe all this garbage gets hauled away to one big landfill. Anyway, that's what the investigative reporter in the big city wrote. The real problem is getting to the dump. Our town road is kind of hilly and curvy, with no shoulders, just corn fields and cows, and they have a 45 mph speed limit. People with pickups and trailers generally loose their trash on the way to the dump, and there is garbage all over our road. But, only a mile away, there is this nice straight town road, with shoulders, and plenty of passing spaces and the speed limit is 30 mph. Who on these town planning boards thinks this stuff up? And, there is only one cop, and he is never here to catch the kids going 65-70 down our road, but he never fails to stop someone going 40 down that nice straigh town road. Our dump is open on Saturdays from 12 til 4 from November 1st to April 30. The rest of the year it's open from 8 til 12. Now, on May 1st, you'd think they'd stay open just a little longer to accomidate those who forget they started closing at noon. But no, come five minutes late, and you have to hang on to your garbage for another week. I really can't complain, though, because our taxes are relatively low compared to those in the city. We have a well and septic. We had a problem with our septic a couple years ago, and of course, they wanted to rip it all up and install a mound system. No way did we want that. I guess they are just out to make a few bucks, heck what a business.
