Daniel S. Goldin, the former head of NASA who was just a day from becoming president of Boston University, resigned Friday amid reports of souring relations with the school's trustees and its outgoing chancellor, John R. Silber.
The announcement ended a tumultuous week that began Oct. 24, when an executive committee of the board of trustees agreed to reconsider the offer to Goldin.

University officials said they reached a financial settlement with Goldin that terminated his contract, reportedly worth $750,000 per year, plus other perquisites. The settlement was widely reported as $1.8 million.

The Globe reported Friday that $30 million in contracts between Boston University and companies affiliated with its trustees led Goldin to question the appearance of conflicts of interest.
Students and faculty members said the Goldin situation reflects poorly on the university.
"I don't know how much they are paying [Goldin] to leave, but it's money they aren't spending on the school and the students," said student Daniella Jelaska, 19, of New Milford, N.J.

Good ridance to bad rubish. Too bad the BU students get to pay for this fiasco.

What I don't understand is why the "unanamous support" for Goldin changed, 2 weeks before his arrival.
Does anyone have any clue why they voted for Goldin, and then changed their minds and started to dissent his taking the position?

Goldin got the fast track for this job, because a Rat lobbyist pulled a lot of strings. Then they started interacting with Goldin and found out what he really is like. There also was some behind the scenes FReeping going on to educate the BU trustees about Goldin's past. You can bet the Rats are torqued over this.

I'd like to see a list of university Presidents who have been hired within the past five years and who have been fired, some virtually immediately, (with nice golden parachutes).
