A magnetic storm provided some breathtaking views in certain parts of western Pennsylvania Thursday night.
Aurora borealis, commonly known as "Northern Lights," lit up the sky with a red glow.
According to the DeNardo Weather team, auroras appear when Earth's magnetic field vibrates in response to a solar wind gust.
People on the ground are protected from any danger by a magnetic bubble around Earth called the "magnetosphere."

WOW! Incredible picts, thanks for posting them. We were hoping to see this happening in our area but we were covered in clouds and missed them.

I was flying from Green Bay to Detroit last night and saw a magnificent display from a very new perspective for me. It was cool being above the clouds and seeing the aurora.

I saw the aurora once from Red Lake, Ontario. It was really beautiful.

Ah, make that 14.1 photographs, not 15 -- one shrank back to thumbnail size. I swear it couldn't have been a flawed preview process, really. OK, you don't believe me.

Thanks for posting.
That looks EXACTLY like the sky at Minot AFB, ND in the Fall of 1970. It circled the entire sky and was amazing.
We were used to seeing the Aurora as a small white light in a corner of the sky, but that night it just took over the whole sky.

That's when I saw my very first NL display- on a plane from Atlanta to Lansing. It was in November of 1990. I'll never forget it. When we landed, we viewed the display from a golf course, and it looked like an angel spreading her wings. It was truly unforgettable.
