TOKYO, Oct 31 — The oldest person in the world, Kamato Hongo, died on Friday aged 116, a spokesman for a hospital in southern Japan said. She had been in hospital in the city of Kagoshima, 620 miles southwest of Tokyo, for several weeks, according to a relative.

BORN IN 1887, when Japan was gradually opening up to the world after more than two centuries of isolation, Hongo was known for her love of “dancing” by waving her hands and for sleeping two days and then staying awake for the next two. She celebrated her 116th birthday last month.

I notice this headline appears quite frequently - is this a trend here or something. It doesn't seem to pay to be the world's oldest person.

Hongo’s death comes a month after the world’s oldest man, Yukichi Chuganji, passed away at his home on the same Japanese island aged 114.

Amazing! In the photo accompanying the original story on MSNBC, she doesn't look a day over 105!

Everytime somebody gets to be the oldest person, they end up dying. Damn! All that living for such a brief, shining moment of glory at the very tip-top of the food chain.

I'm curious about the 2-days of sleeping and 2-days of staying awake. I wonder if that tricked the body into living longer. Maybe our aging process is triggered by the number of times we sleep. Something to look into.

So her body thought she was 58 when she died? Seems kinda young. :-)

116?
She slept 2 days, then was awake 2 days...
116 year divided by 2 awake days = 58 "awake" years...
???

She was fortunate that her guardian wasn't Michael Schiavo.

Why live the oldest people always in Japan? Maybe I should try more fish and Japanese water?
