Ever since 1994, when California voters enacted Proposition 187 (a bill barring illegal immigrants from receiving many public services), leading Republicans around the country have shied away from saying anything critical about illegal immigration, viewing it as a political kiss of death.

Um, President Bush is backing another round of amnesty, much like Reagan did. I hardly call that shying away from the issue. To the contrary, most politicians in leadership positions are in favor of mexican immigration because its a cheap source of labor for big business.
