State trooper and father charged with selling cocaine
ROCK HILL--A state trooper and his father have been arrested and charged with selling crack cocaine at the father's house, authorities say.
Trooper Tony Caldwell, 37, of Spartanburg was released from a Rock Hill jail Saturday after he posted $10,000 bond on two crack cocaine distribution charges and receiving and possessing stolen goods, authorities said. He has been suspended without pay, said state Public Safety Department spokesman Sid Gaulden.
Eugene Caldwell, 56, also faces two crack cocaine distribution charges as well as unlawful storage of liquor, bookmaking, possession of marijuana and operating a business without a license. He was being held at the jail Saturday night on $10,500 bond.
The younger Caldwell was assigned to the Spartanburg area and has been a trooper with the Highway Patrol since the summer of 2002.
Agents from a drug task force raided the home about 8:30 p.m. Friday, after undercover officers bought crack from Eugene Caldwell earlier in the week, said Marvin Brown, senior commander of the task force.
When they went inside the home, Tony Caldwell, who was off-duty and dressed in plain clothes, rushed into the kitchen and threw a bag of crack into a sink, Brown said.
Officers recovered the plastic bag, which contained five rocks of crack. They also found a plastic bag with three rocks of crack in Tony Caldwell's pocket, Brown said.
In all, officers seized 1 gram of crack from Tony Caldwell and 4.5 grams from his father.
The task force had received numerous complaints of drug activity at the home in the past several weeks, Brown said.

We will apply the liberal adage vis a vis gun owners. Criminals use guns, hence all gun owners are criminals.
OK, from the top. Some cops are crooked dope dealers and receivers of stolen property, hence vis a vis, all cops are crooked dope dealers and receivers of stolen property.

The SCHP was a very good organization a few years back but leadership has hit an all time low along with background checks and political appointments.
It is tough that people in certain places have to cater to certain politicians to hang on.
In my opinion the same can be said of the CIA and FBI. Mind you, these are only one mans opinions.
I hope Governor Sanford is given a chance to do something about this situation and acts.

I did not mean to imply the SCHP wasnt still a good organization, they still have great troops just lacking in leadership in certain areas.

Another corrupt cop thanks to the War On (some) Drugs. So, if all drugs were legal he would have been out doing charity work instead?
To: PBRSTREETGANG
So, if all drugs were legal he would have been out doing charity work instead? Maybe he would - we don't know because they aren't legal. But what we do know is that the War On (some) Drugs, corrupts many people, cops included. The cure is worse than the disease.

No, he was corrupt because he was corrupt. There are legitimate arguments against the WOD, this is not one of them.

No, he was corrupt because he was corrupt. There are legitimate arguments against the WOD, this is not one of them. I agree.
However, the War on Drugs probably gave him ready access to the market, and his status as a cop probably gave him some leverage developing market share.

We see stories of drug-dealing cops all the time; can you point to a single instance of cops illegally dealing alcohol, cigarretes, or human flesh? The illegality of drugs has made them an unparalleled source of corrupting money.

Operating a business without a license? What was the business? Crack house?Yep. All retail sales businesses in SC (even if they are illegal) must have a license and collect sales taxes.
You mean I can't buy my liquor in bulk and store it until I'm ready to drink it? Amerika, ain't she great?
You can store all the liquor you want to on private property. But it is illegal to store liquor in a place of business.

The SCHP was a very good organization a few years back but leadership has hit an all time low along with background checks and political appointments. In this case I would say it has more to do with lax background checks and the lowered standards of affrimative action hiring. Tony Caldwell has only been on the force for about 14 months, 5 of which he spent in training. He didn't become a crooked cop, he was hired as one.
