I recently did a cross country road trip (no pun intended). I-70 going west and I-40 going east for the most part. I saw two huge crosses on the wayside. One in Groom Texas claims to be the largest cross in the Western hemisphere. I think these athiests might be distracted in Groom so I suggest they avoid it. I know their complaint is that these roadside memorials are on public land and I saw many on my trip but they were hardly as distracting as these big ones. The trouble is these large ones aren't on public land just very visible from the Interstates. :)

I think these people are full of crap, but these roadside memorials do represent a safety hazard. Not so much because of the distraction they present (as others have pointed out, there are a lot of other distractions on the road that are more serious than these), but because in most places anyone who stops to create them or tend to them is breaking the law and poses a safety hazard to other drivers on the road.

There always will be critics.

If you're looking at ... any other thing that's been put on the road, then you're certainly not looking at the road.

Using this logic, all the road signs would have to come down.

If it's religious in nature it could also be offensive ...

Ah, the truth comes out. I'm not religious, but I'm sick of this minority of people who are "offended" dictating to the majority. Atheists are starting to "offend" me.

What is it about this roadway that has it starting to look like a graveyard?

These memorials are quite popular in Mexico. When traveling by car in Mexico I always knew were to drive carefully. When approaching an intersection that would literally look like a grave yard with 50 or more crosses, I knew to be extra careful.
