Have the POTUS landing in San Bernardino after going on fire recon with the USFS. Put the POTUS in a USFS flight suit and have him land at San Bernardino Airport to address the people directly.

All I know is that here in Santee, the sky to the east, west and north are getting darker by the minute. You can hardly breath outside.

All my neighbors that evac'd yesterday have returned for the most part but people are getting nervous again because of the thickening smoke.

Its very still now.. no wind at all and thats a good thing. I am wondering if the gathering darkness (sorry, that sounds really melodramatic) is just the smoke settling due to the stillness.

I can find no info about my area on any news channel or site.

But Grey Dufis is speaking now so we're undoubtedly saved! (ahem)

The Democrats are playing politics with this disaster.

Will you stop it about the President coming out there right now -- How many times do you have to be told that a Presidential visit requires a lot of advance people and those folks are most likely involved in all of this disaster? You do not bring AF One with the President on board into SoCal right now when the airports are not even running all their flights. The President has signed the declaration for a disaster area for four counties.

Please knock it off about the President -- his coming out there is not a priority -- Federal Funds are a priority and they will be on the way shortly.

I've been thinking about your thoughts on the President, and I've got a different take. Over his Presidency, Bush has had an un-Clinton-like tendency to stay out of the way during an actual emergency, in part so as not to divert resources, etc. I have found that refreshing in part as with Clinton there was always a sense it was about him looking good and seeking the most visible stage possible, rather than genuine empathy or leadership on his part.

I do think the President needs to be sure to be "on message" addressing this and not let Gov. Davis try to throw blame on the government, etc. He also needs to keep in mind what we've been talking about over the last couple days, the tendency of the Eastern "elite" to discount what happens out here (on the news, etc.) so that it looks like we're not being ignored. But my own feeling is that it would be more appropriate for the President to come in a few days, when things aren't in the thick of action. For now, he should focus on making available all federal resources, and being visible on TV in regards to things like that. Just my two cents, which may or may not be worth much :).

I have a friend who lives near the university at San Bernadino. She's been evacuated and is back in... she says the same thing about the darkness and stillness.
