"Naked" Miss Afghanistan slammed "We condemn Vida Samadzai, she is not representing Afghanistan's women, and this is not women's freedom." Surabi said according to Afghan culture women should not demonstrate their worth using their "beauty or bodies" but by their skills and knowledge. "In the name of women's freedom, what this Afghan girl has done is not freedom but is lascivious," the minister said. The 25-year-old Afghan contestant, who lives in the United States, is the first Afghan woman in 30 years to participate in the Miss World international beauty contest being held in the Philippines capital this week. The dark-haired, black-eyed Samadzai, apparently from a Pashtun tribe, was born and raised in Afghanistan but left for the United States in 1996 to escape the extremist Taliban regime which forced women to cover themselves from head to toe. Under the harsh regime women were not allowed to work outside their homes or go out without a close relative beside them. After the fall of the militia in 2001, an increasing number of women left the burqa, or veil, at home and some took jobs. The only other Miss Afghanistan was Zohra Daoud, who joined the Miss Universe contest in 1972.

PRESIDENT Hamid Karzai's minister for women's affairs yesterday condemned Miss Afghanistan, as Vida Samadzai became the country's first woman in the post-Taliban era to appear in a bikini during a beauty contest in Manila.
"Appearing naked before a camera or television is not women's freedom but in my opinion is to entertain men," Minister Habiba Surabi said.
The right is equality under law, not attendance. The Academies are governmental institutions not private ones.
My statement dealt with the accuracy of your contention that women enjoy the same rights now as they did 50 or so years ago. Most women would not return to the 50's for this reason alone.
Men over the age of 60 are not allowed to enroll in the service academies either. Are they not equal under the law? Or how about men who are quadraplegics? I can't qualify for the WIC program (seeing as I'm not a woman, and infant or a child and I earn too much) Does that make me unequal under the law.
Some people just don't qualify for some activities. Women should not be in combat roles in the military. They really shouldn't even be in the military as that is not the best use of them as a resource of this country. This is not a case of rights. They still have the same rights as they did in the 50's.

And part of the evidence you used was abortion. They shouldn't have the right to murder today. It is a violation of our foundational right to life.
Therefore they did have the same rights in the 50s that they have now AND they were regarded more highly by society. They had more freedom of action and they were, I'd hazard to guess, much happier.
Now admittedly I live in a community where many women live the 50's type lifestyle and they are thrilled with it. In fact I seem to remember reading a while back that there is a growing number of women either leaving the workforce or never joining it. Lots of college girls have realized that being a wife and mommy is their calling in life and they intend to be happy instead of have a career
We could go on about this all day but we've gone too far off topic. I won't respond to any answer (that is, I'll let you have the last word if you so desire) and we'll pick this up again on a thread more suited to it. God bless.
No kidding. I look at that and to me she looks like she's built like a 15 year old boy.
Real women have curves.
How can you possibly disagree with that? I'd say it is spot on. Take the statement as if he were actually talking about naked women, perhaps commenting on the porn industry and not Miss Afghanistan in a bathing suit (that's no bikini BTW).
That's a subject that could fill an entire thread of its own.
I'm sorry. I just went back and read your original comment. I thought you'd stated 'agree'...not 'disagree'.
Dang! I just gotta learn to keep my fingers off the keyboard before I've had coffee.
Again, apologies.
Ham-head Karzi's government is not so far remove from the Taliban after all... Perhaps it's better to pave the place over and start again from scratch...
Just damn.
If you want on the new list, FReepmail me. This IS a high-volume PING list...
Beautiful? You better look closer - she is coyote ugly.
Yes, and we appreciate being entertained. What will they do when PLAYBOY has "The Girls of Afghanistan."
Mmmm...Taliban jerky...
So the problem is where?
Football is immodest and makes of men a mere barbarian object. Should we cancel all football games? Make the players wear burkas?
