[history]
Senate Democrats are threatening a filibuster of the final version of the Medicare prescription-drug bill.
The House and Senate have passed different versions of the hotly debated measure. Angered by reports that a House-Senate conference is leaning toward House Republican positions on key elements of the plan, Democrats yesterday urged President Bush to demand a more bipartisan bill.

This may prove to be a situation where the Democrats, for all the wrong reasons, still may be doing the right thing. This bill SHOULD die. If replaced with anything, it should be a means-tested remedy for a particular situation, not an entitlement.
And "panderation" makes an interesting new word. The elected officials "pander" to a segment of the population, while the real intent is to RATION the benefit to the targeted recipients.

Write AARP and tell them to cut their support for the pork barrel. As Jules remarked in the movie Pulp Fiction. "I don't dig on no swine."

I have already let AARP know that I do not join socialist organizations. Never have, never will!

This part is interesting....
"Democrats are angriest at a provision in the House plan that would require traditional Medicare to compete directly against private health plans by 2010 a move Democrats say would destroy the government health program for senior citizens."

"I'm encouraged. If you've got Ted Kennedy and [House Minority Leader] Nancy Pelosi mad, there might be something to this bill," said Rep. Jack Kingston, Georgia Republican. I think what they said was, "Please don't throw mw in that briar patch."

If the Dems take back congress, their version will be bigger, more expensive, more addictive, and more bureaucratic. One of the versions will happen...the GOP version or the Democrat version, IMO.

The 2010 provision - I like that. Wouldn't it be nice to have a plan where Medicare is completely privatized by, say, 2006?
And what's with Tiny, Tiny Timmy? I thought one of those Dakota winds had blown his scrawny ass away :)

The Perscription Drug Panderation Act Must Die!!!! Well said. The best way to guarantee the cost of anything will go through the roof is to promise that the government will pay for it. I don't mind a plan to help the poor pay medical expenses, but this thing is a panderation not-thought-out cash cow that will bankrupt generations.

Big time!! The best analogy I can think of for this process is the impact of GSLs on the tuition charged by colleges and universities.

Id like to see them drop the income tax for people over 55 and let them spend their money on whatever they want, be it health care, prescription drugs, housing, transportation et cetera instead of the government dictating how to spend.
The government should stick to governing and get out of the health care, education, performing arts and entertainment businesses.

I'd be happy to see it dead too, altho when the Dems blame the Rs for its demise...

seems like the only things not filibustered these days are their pay increases and trivial stuff like spam email and telemarketing phone calls

I would love to see this filibustered, but, let's look at the motives to
why they want it filibustered.
They are scared to death that any program is better (in most non-Freepers seniors minds) than no program. They also hate the fact (which we do to) of a Republican getting this bill and not the Democrats.
They complain that its not good enough, yet they failed for 8 years with Clinton to bring anything to the floor.
They will filibuster this not because they hate the bill, but because they hate the Republicans!!!
I see this as pretty win,win for Bush, and apparently so do they.

Just goes to show you the Demonrats are all politics all the time. Here is a bill that is what the Demonrats say they are for and is a liberal bill, but the Demonrats are going to kill it because it's about politics. Good thing for a bad Demonrat-friendly bill to die at the hands of the people who are for such things.

Wait a minute here. I want free prescriptions. I mean, if it is free, why wouldn't anyone want it?

You pay taxes to support it. The claim that htese drugs are free is a bald-faced lie.
