NASCAR great Bill Elliott's scheduled appearance at Atlanta's SciTrek venue Thursday morning comes amid rumors of his retirement from the racing circuit.

Elliott, honored as NASCAR's "Most Popular Driver" 16 times, is expected to reveal details regarding his future plans involving a project outside of racing.

Just days ago, Elliott announced he would retire from full-time competition at the end of the current season. He is expected to run five races next year at tracks Elliott decides as having been significant to his career.

This week, Elliott’s 3,685 points puts him in 10th place in NASCAR's driver standings. He finished 10th at last Sunday's Winston Cup Subway 500.

His career boasts wins at the Daytona 500, Brickyard 400, the Winston Million and other major professional racing milestones.

Gotta give Bill credit for going out while he is still running strong, unlike legends of the past. I would LOVE to see him win of the few races he runs next year.

God Bless, Mr. Elliot (Even though you made my life miserable by edging out Harry Gant in about 8 races in 1992).

His announcement today is not supposed to be racing related. However I suspect he'll have one this weekend.

I'd love to see some of those nancy boy young guns do some of the things he did at Talladega in the pre-restrictor plate days. They'd crap their firesuits!

Bill has always been a classy fellow. I wish him well. He has provided a lot of thrills for his fans over the years.

How many others will move on next year? DJ, Mark, Terry, Ricky.. they are all still pretty competitive.

Thanks for the ping and the post. :-)

I believe it was Talladega where he set the world speed record for a pushrod V8... I think it was 212 mph!

You are correct. He also won a race there (85 Winston), coming from 2 1/2 laps down under green to win. That is unheard of these days.

You mean stock car record. There are cars which have gone waay past that on a straight line course.
