"We depend on Saudi Oil, and it is therefore why they are not scared of us..." The first tankers of Iraqi oil arrived on the East and West Coasts last week.
The "oil weapon" is losing its punch.

According to the WSJ, Pakistan has already done this sort of thing with North Korea and we haven't done anything about any of it. Pity.

Nothing will happen, because unfortunately our administration/establishment is full of cold war dinosaurs who will do absolutely nothing about this.

Do you believe the Bush-Saudi relationship is a case of 'friends close, enemies closer'?

I will bet that that article will have quotes by Senior IDF officials who spoke to the Israeli Knesset yesterday.

"Do you believe the Bush-Saudi relationship is a case of 'friends close, enemies closer'?" Perhaps. There are some long-term ties between the Bushes and the Saudis. But I believe they have always been based on national interests and hard-headed pragmatism. They are familiar to each other, yes. And that helps -- from the standpoint of understanding and communication.
Today, the landscape has changed and national interests aren't what they used to be. But the pragmatism remains.
Better than most Presidents, because of his father's experience and connections, plus his own experience in the oil business, Bush understands the Saudis. This is to our advantage -- and to their disadvantage.
Much of the maneuvering that Bush has undertaken in the Middle East for the War on Terror has been, I believe, specifically oriented toward isolating and eventually dealing with the Saudis.
I don't worry about the Bush-Saudi relationship. I worry about the State Dept-Saudi relationship...

The strategic logic for the two countries to do this is there -- and inexorable. The only thing that is uncertain is the ability of our foreign policy "nativists" and "world order builders" in Washington to think strategically about what is necessary to protect OUR interests for once. If they did, they would understand that our ONLY option over the long run is to accept the reality that we are in a "clash of civilizations" (Huntington's view, while the Queen of PC Condy Rice disputes that truth and talks openly of a mythical "global culture" -- she ran Stanford people!) and can only WIN if we destroy the enemy's WILL to fight (Clausewitz). To do that will require more than police actions and small wars -- heck, our enemies THRIVE on those (they want us to be tactical instead of strategic). It will require strategic warfare focused on the ideological extirpation of radical Islam and the transformation (to put it diplomatically) of the primary state sponsors of Radical Islamic sects -- Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Pakistan (all of which are "going nuclear"). Iraq and Syria are a flanking "theater of operations" compared to the MAIN BATTLE AREA -- the struggle against the ideology of Islamic terrorism.

Having American forces in Qatar,Bahrein,Djibouti doesn't make sense-we are not dealing with Iraq here-most people here seem to think in that vein-Saudi Arabia is the HOME OF Islam&Islamofascism-think bout the support one would get from Western Europe if he were to attack The Vatican-the whole place(&wherever Muslims live) will explode-the solution would be to hit potential (&less venemous) allies like the Libyans&ofcourse America's most valiant ally Pakistan-most of us Indians will support it as it is only a matter of time b4 the Pakis lob a nuke across here!!!!!!!SO the way forward is to let the Xitement die down&see The Saudis pragmatically-isolating or hitting them will inflame the situation-defang them without touching them

...just weeks after American troops leave Saudi---yep the saudis are our friends alright. Hope they like using that airbase we built for them.

No it wasn't actually. It was Abba Eban.

If you're devious,
you can almost see some sense
for us in this scheme...
Elements within
Pakistan are our "partners"
in Afghanistan.
So, we have "input"
into Pak doings... Now, if
nukes happen to blow
in the Arab world,
the US can just step back
and point at the Paks!
