Guess what, you also wrote a nice letter stating your OPINION. Facts, dear, promote understanding and if you were a classical liberal you would know that.
As a "progressive" all you have is emotion, not logic. You have an appeal to some sort of moral highground that does not exist in your philosophy because you have no central belief other than some nebulous Rodney King mantra much like Al Gore and his, "No ruling authority."
As a philosopher, you also teach school in California.

Wouldn't it be refreshing if one of these "progressives" would actually hang around and defend their positions/accusations/distortions?
Sadly though, despite their pretentions, the left doesn't seem to base their worldview on logical analysis, reasoned debate, or even historical reflection. They know best and we're damned fools for not recognizing it and capitulating.
God help us if they ever get into power again. Every time they do, it results in mass murder of incomprehensible numbers of citizens by their own state if they dare dissent. And all by those who claim to want "freedom of inquiry".
That's progressivism. Progressing towards the absolute domination of the many by the few at any cost. All for their own good, of course.

ask yourself from which direction is all the mean spiritedness coming from? Which party?
than ask yourself is that is your party, and if it is representing you. if it is, then you are part of the problem. if not, then you have nothing to be ashamed of.
we all know that the vast majority of mud is coming from the democrats. To cast the issue as one of equal culpability is disengenuous.

Interesting, but completely off-base. The Republican Party has been hijacked by moderates, not conservatives.
The writer reminds me of my colleagues from the days when I was an academic. He never stops to think that I and my employees are fleeced by the state to pay for his life of perpetual navel contemplation.
