Ex-Governor Talks From Prison (Edwin Edwards)

(CBS) Former Louisiana governor Edwin Edwards—who believed in letting the good times roll no matter what, has given CBS News his first interview since going to prison after being convicted on corruption charges.

From behind the fences of a federal prison, the smooth-talking, four-term governor remains as blunt as ever, reports CBS News Correspondent Lee Cowan.

"They take away everything from you that's important, except breath itself," says Edwards.

And even from prison, Edwards is a man with a message.

"To my critics out there, I want them to know that they're getting what they wanted, I'm suffering. But to my friends, I want them to know I can handle it," he says.

He was known as the "Cajun Prince," a silver-haired, unapologetic gambler and womanizer with as much charm as color.

But he also had his demons. Entering a court house prior to his conviction, Edwards was asked if he had anything to hide. "Oh yes, but nothing to do with this investigation," he said.

In the 16 years he was Louisiana's governor, he dodged two dozen Grand Jury investigations and was acquitted in two federal trials.

He took none of it seriously, and was once so arrogant he even arrived at the courthouse in a horse drawn buggy.

Edwards told Cowan he believes he was sentenced unfairly.

"I have to just say frankly I never did think what I did justified a ten-year prison sentence, and most people in Louisiana feel the same way," he says.

And the 100,000 signatures on a state-wide petition to get him out of prison early seem to prove that assertion.

"I think right now, if he could be placed on the ballot for the governor's race, I think he would make the run-off," says friend Ed Powell.

At the Chicken Shack restaurant in Baton Rouge, customers line up to sign the petition.

"He's taking a big long fall and I don't think it's fair," says one woman. "I'm not saying the man was perfect, but I just don't feel like he should be locked up at this point in his life."

But Edwards also has some detractors.

"What he did was illegal, and he's in jail. And he should be," says one Louisiana resident.

This month marks the end of Edwards' first year in prison. If the petition drive is not successful, he has at least seven and a half more, meaning he won't walk out of these gates until he's 84 years old.

"I'll survive, I'll live to walk out of here," says Edwards. "I don't think I deserve it. But hell, I've gotten a lot of good things I didn't deserve."

Forgiveness, he says, is a rare visitor behind the prison fences. But back on the Bayou he knows it's different. A comfort to a man who never claimed to be an angel, but never thought he'd pay for his deals with the devil.

I saw part of this interview, and it is unbelievable how arrogant he is. He robbed millions of dollars from his own state, and extorted money from people and businesses for at least twelve years, and he still thinks the feds targeted him for no good reason.

"I have to just say frankly I never did think what I did justified a ten-year prison sentence, and most people in Louisiana feel the same way," he says.

Lying scumbag. As a Louisiana native and resident, no one I know feels that way.

Thanks for the post, comments and pulse taking among freedom lovers. Criminals are anti-freedom. A lying scumbag, is an apt description.

[I'll survive, I'll live to walk out of here," says Edwards.]

A politician finally being held accountable for his corruption certainly deserves special honor. I therefore declare my evening defacation to be in rememberance of his "public service" to the citizens of the Great State of Louisiana.

I'll bet she does have some stories, along with six kazillion others. Supposedly, he needed a "companion" at least once a day. He nicknamed himself "The Silver Zipper."

A friend of mine was at a party with EWE, and he started admiring an attractive woman in the room. My friend bet EWE that he could convince her to go home with him before EWE could woo the woman, and EWE took him up on the bet. After losing the bet, EWE refused to pay; the attractive woman was my friend's wife. Not only is he a lying scumbag, he's a sore-loser scumbag, as well. My condolences to your cousin.

Dittos here too. Club Fed is too good for him. He ruined this state and I hope he rots there.

Hopefully, we can elect Bobby Jindal as our next governer and see some changes in that tradition. I'm in New Orleans, the frequent seat of Louisiana's seediest governments, and we have a fantastic mayor right now (C. Ray Nagin). Maybe, just maybe, Louisianians are ready to reform.

I recognize that, after three centuries of corruption, I might be a bit overly-optomistic, but one can always hope.

I was born in Baton Rouge, and lived in LA all throughout EWE's reign. My parents still live there. I am embarassed to have to say that.

Edwards is the epitome of a corrupt politician, and the epitome of a Tax-and-spend demon-rat. It is his legacy that LA still ranks at the bottom of all categories. I personally feel that ten year was too lenient a sentence.

BTW - The "Chicken Shack" mentioned in the artical is located in the "worst" part of town; for the last 30 years, prostitutes and drug dealers are more prevalent than cops. Does this give you an idea where EWE draws his support?

LOL. Wasn't Edwards the one who originally said, "I'll get re-elected, lessin' they find me in bed with a dead woman, or a live boy."

Yup; that was the man. He's nothing more than a snake-oil salesman, so he's got a smooth tongue and a quick wit.
