`He's really hurting right now' (Bartman alert)
Chicago Tribune ^ | 10/16/03 | Staff (see article)

By all indications, nobody at Wrigley Field during Game 6 of the National League Championship Series was rooting harder for the Cubs than Steven Bartman.

As a youth league and high school second baseman, Bartman's hero was Cubs infielder Ryne Sandberg. As a 26-year-old Northbrook resident, he was so passionate about baseball that he took time off from work to coach an elite youth team.

The Cubbie who muffed that double play should set Bartman up for life for sheilding him from Bucknerville.

Seriously, I suggest that Bartman get the hell out of Chicago.

The Outfit Guys alone are going to want to make him Sleep with the Fishes.

Be Seeing You,

Chris

It never ceases to amaze me how much emotional capital people in this country place in sports teams and their success (or failure). I mean, I understand supporting your team and pulling for them and all, but, geez, I mean, there's more to life than that.

Dumping this misfortune on this one poor snook who was just doing what fans do at a ballgame is just ridiculous. It's not like the guy was responsible for all the miscues that followed. The Marlins just made the plays and the Cubs just couldn't stop them. Those things happen in sports.

This coming from someone who is not a Cubs fan (but I was pulling for them against the Marlins).

Hack Wilson AND Ernie Banks could not have helped the Cubs this year.
I could have rooted for them if not for D. Baker and M. Prior, two of nature's a$$holes.
Maybe Baker's players were done in by the cold.

What's the name of the ump that blew the inteference call? The fan was hung out to dry. He not only touched the ball, but also Alou's glove, and both in the field of play (Alou's glove never went into the stands).

If the ump had called Castillo out, as he should have, we wouldn't have this problem.

Doesn't excuse the fan, though. If you're sitting front row along the line, you don't reach forward for a fly ball.

Losers always need a scapegoat.

The Sox had game seven and so did the Cubs. Both lost again.

That guy didn't give up 8 runs in the eighth. And he certainly didn't give up 9 last night.

I'm bummed. I was looking forward to a possible Sox-Cubs Series.

If it ends up Yanks-Marlins, I'll be going to bed early.

As I mentioned late on another thread, I think it's pretty obvious what the REAL problem was with the Cubs. It wasn't this one guy. In fact, it wasn't this guy at all. It was the over abundance of Hispanic and Caribbean national "players of color". Afterall, since the darker skinned players can withstand the heat of midsummer, ergo making more productive ball players, it stands to reason that they should have sat those guys for the playoffs and started all the white guys who are obviously more productive in the colder, chillier temperatures of mid October in Chicago.

Perhaps they should be scouting the Canadian or Eskimo leagues for some new talent that can help them out for next year's playoffs... Right, Dusty?

This man was one of dozens who had their arms (and baseball gloves) fully extended toward that pop fly. Fan interference was NOT called.

It was an unfortunate and disappointing event, but understandable. The fan didn't cause the fielder to bauble the ball or the Cubs pitching to give up all those runs. The game is won or lost on the field, not in the stands.

Too bad, I was rooting for the Cubs--they were real gamers, but the Marlins are clearly the superior team man for man. The Marlins found the way to win and teh Cubs just couldn't stop them.

(Alou's glove never went into the stands)

That part is just not so. Alou's glove was over the top of the wall.
