I had to watch my Grandmother in a vegetative state for over a year.Terry doesn't fit the vegetative state, apparently.
She moves her eyes responding to a balloon's movement, shows happiness at seeing her parents, can make audible vocal sounds, and can sit up in bed.

That question was directed at another issue not this lady specifically. But thanks for the info.

At what point is the treasury tapped out and who will suffer because of it? What are you whining about? The family has said they will bear any burden for this young woman that they love.

I had to watch my Grandmother in a vegetative state for over a year. I got to see everything that comes with it. Thanks but no thanks....that is not living & I KNOW that she wouldn't have wanted to stay that way. You have your definition of "living" & I have mine. Feeding tubes & ventilators are not a part of it. Thanks :) Did your grandmother smile at you and respond, laughing and crying both?? This woman is NOT a older woman. She is at a age that could be rehabilitated. Answer this.......if your grandmother was 39, showed signs of improving with therapy , would you still KILL HER DELIBERATELY?? I doubt it.

Thank you for posting your experiences. I believe there are a lot more "medical miracles" out there than most people realize. Think how many more there would be if doctors didn't try to strong-arm people into giving up right away.
I wish all the best to your loved one and his mother. Sometimes these tragedies provide great blessings. No life is worthless, regardless of other people's opinions on "quality of life".

Well, hmm, that most definitely explains your particular perspective a bit. I'm so sorry for your loss.

STATEMENT OF BISHOP ROBERT N. LYNCH CONCERNING THE TERRI SCHIAVO CASE
Some in Terris family believe that her condition calls for the removal of her feeding tube and others do not. Even physicians, who have evaluated Terris condition, with varying degrees of access for clinical analysis, disagree on her condition. In Florida, when families cannot agree, trial judges are permitted to act as proxies and make decisions about life-prolonging procedures. In so doing, we ask our judges to make decisions that they might not make for themselves or their loved ones, but ones that clear and convincing evidence shows the individual would make for herself or himself.
To: cateizgr8
Sorry, but that's not my definition of vegetative state. That's the medical definition, and I would think that if that's the word being used in a matter this serious, it should fit the circumstance. Terri is not comotose, and she is not in a vegetative state. This isn't about you or me.

Excessive rhetoric like the use of murder or the designation of the trial judge or appellate judges as murderers not be used by anyone from our Judeo-Christian tradition. Would this guy be part of the group that condones homosexual priests?

At some point the questions "how much will this cost" and "how will it be paid for and by whom" must be asked and answered. I have thought about this, justshutupandtakeit, and you are right.
I have figured out how much my taxes pay for your schooling, the schooling of your children, (or future children), and on and on , and have decided that it is INCONVENIENT for me to have to pay any further taxes to support you or your family (or the government's intercession in/for your family) in any way, and therefore, YOU SHOULD BE PUT TO DEATH just to make life a little less INCONVENIENT for ME. Is that OK?
To: george wythe
They've simply declined jurisdiction, or refused to hear the case altogether. Not sure they are privy to all pertinent info in that situation, are they?

Read some books by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, or people who work with the dying, such as hospice nurses. People who are helpless such as Terri but conscious, have feelings, emotions, and thoughts. They have awareness, they can experience love, fear, anxiety, comfort, and affection. Even people in a coma can often or usually hear, and Terri isn't even near being in a coma.
The bottom line is that we have no right to play God. God decides who gets born, who dies, and when. When we start deciding who gets to be born and who doesn't, and hastening peoples' deaths, it is only a SHORT time until mass slaughter. It is already happening with abortion, but babies cannot escape and tell their stories, so for many it is out of sight and out of mind.
After reading several books - many eye-witness accounts - of Nazi concentration camps, my overriding thought was - "Why do people think it won't happen again? It will happen. People aren't any better now."
It's a matter of time before Nazi style cleansing begins. Hitler began with abortion, sterilization of unfit, and then "cleaned out" the mental hospitals, the retarded, the very sick, and the old. Then the amuptees, and so on. The reasoning? They were useless eaters, or they couldn't enjoy life, therefore they had no right to live.
Because to these demons, life itself is not sacred. Only life which is useful. To God, each soul is precious, and so it should be to us. Not for any reason other than each soul is His.
To: itsahoot
My question is NOT the reason the Nazis did what they did. They were not killing them for the cost savings but for ideological reasons particularly the "defective."
But our society at that time would have never considered paying millions of dollars to keep a patient "alive" either. It couldn't have afforded to even if desired.
But thanks for trying to tie me to the Nazis.

They've simply declined jurisdiction, or refused to hear the case altogether. Not sure they are privy to all pertinent info in that situation, are they? Remember the Elian case?
I think I heard those objections before.
To: george wythe
This case has been litigated in public courtrooms, both at the state and federal level. Your point being that courts can make decisions which are legal but evil?
AFIK, both sides presented their expert witnesses, and the judges made their decisions accordingly.
And a few generations ago courts decided that slaves weren't persons. That was "legal" - did that make it right? Were the people in the Underground Railroad that helped escaped slaves to freedom criminals who sould have been prosecuted?
It is becoming clear that the argument "it's legal" or "the judges decided" has no more validity.

Your post # 30...
"The trouble is, didn't they also remove the port for the tube today? If so, then its pretty much a done deal..."
No it is Not a done deal.
Surgeons can very easily operate and replace the Port of that feeding/Gastro-intestinal Tube at any time!
PRAYERS for TERRI SCHINDLER..TERRI WANTS TO LIVE!!!

Thanks, it has been six years and life has been less important to me ever since. But I had our boys to raise so that kept me busy and distracted.
