The White House can't deliver a lot of money to Arnold. But it can deliver political and moral support. We still face a largely liberal and Democratic State Legislature here despite the election. California is still a long ways from becoming a Republican State.

Of course California sends more to Washington than it gets back. Don't most states?

From the supposed news article:

...President George W. Bush is embracing California's next governor, hoping an alliance will win him the state's pile of electoral votes next year.

I'm noticing this a lot in "news" stories.

How does the "reporter" know that this is the President's motivation? Is he a mentalist? Or just mental? Has President Bush stated this? "I'm gonna 'mbrace Gov'ner Shortzngr, cuz I'm hopin 'n 'liance with him..." and all?

I hate this mindreading-as-reporting crap. I notice it aimed more at Repubs than Demos. /c8

"Now, the Republicans are fully responsible for the economic mess from Washington to Sacramento," Mulholland said.

That is assuming that the California legislature signs on to every one of Arnold's ideas.

Fat chance. Muholland conveniently failed to remind reporters which party controls the State Legislature!

"He has to deliver some goods to show that (Schwarzenegger) being a Republican with a Republican in the White House makes a difference," she said.

I'm glad the Republicans are different from the Democrats...

Democrats and their fawning media are worried sick that CA just "might" be in play come election 2004, so they're trying to put a Machevillian spin on Arnold's victory and his friendship with POTUS.

I think they should arm-wrestle for that $50B. Winner takes all.

But the movie actor will bring his own political agenda to a meeting with Bush in Riverside on Thursday.

Movie actor? A not-so-subtle zing. Try: Governor-elect Schwarzenegger.....

Oh, I know.

I used to think AP was the very worst. But Reuters has long-since shouldered its way to the front of THAT line.

Good catch.

Do you imagine this headline a few years ago:

"Peanut Farmer to Host Mid-East Summit"

"We want to see as many photos as possible of the two of them together. It's a good visual for Californians," said state Democratic Party spokesman Bob Mulholland. The anger behind California's successful recall campaign "will now go to two Republicans, Bush Junior and Arnold," he said.

Wow, Bob gets stupider every day.

Yes, but perhaps it CAN deliver a crackdown on illegals, and a sincere effort to limit illegal immigration.

Either that, or have the INS start into the production of Soylent Green (g)

I don't think so. All those federal taxes have to be spent somewhere, either in government contracts or other social spending.

Some states (I'd guess West Virginia would be a good example) receive far more in federal outlays that they cough up. Californians get back about .77 for every dollar in federal taxes they give.

That said I'd feel more confortable if our guv would talk as much about cutting the size of the state rather than all the 'collectinator' talk.

Actually, for some truly unaccountable reason, Mulholland didn't acknowledge that Arnold is not yet in power and therefore by definition cannot be responsible for anything!

Oops.

No, surprisingly. Bush states almost uniformly get more in aid than they pay in taxes. Gore states like CA and NY pay way more than they get back. We have donor states and recipient states. I've never understood how any sane New Yorker or Californian could vote Dem since they are voting for more federal spending away from their states and more taxation. These states get a big boost in tax breaks, too, since they are the biggest tax payers. Makes no sense.
