umm, that happened in 97. Since then, as you know, Wayne dumped everyone and the team. This is a new team under a new owner. The Marlins are a real ball club whether or not they win tomorrow.
To: JustPiper
Although the kid was the one who actually got his filthy paws on the ball, the other two made the effort to do so, which makes them just as guilty, imo.

I wish I had some Ides of March... Youre talking about this years birthday, right?
Well, after a few good laughs, the sting is subsiding.
Thank you all.

The greatest feeling of momentum I ever had was in a basketball game in high school. A few shots by another guard and a few good defensive plays changed everything for a comeback. In the 4th quarter, I hit five straight jump shots from 15-20 feet. It was almost like I was unconscious or it was an out of body experience.
"Momentum changes" only exist in hindsight.
Interestingly, statistical studies have shown that "shooting streaks" in basketball are basically random (relative to the established shooting ability of a player.)

Stunning comes to mind.
They showed so many old people in their Cub hats, jerseys etc. They'd waited all their lives for this and were just beaming and then ...
Idiot fan - an error - and IMO Dusty left Prior in too long and yes I was calling for him to pull him a couple of batters earlier than he did. Tricky for pitchers in weather that appeared to be pretty chilly.

Regarding momentum and sports ... have played hockey for ... damn ... almost 30 years ... when you work your arse off and finally score a goal ... only to have the opposition answer right back with an 80 foot shot past your sleeping goalie ... you can feel the team sag ...
That said ... I'm not sure baseball is a "momentum" sport ... however, it is a "numbers" sport, and, by my count, that lost out accounted for at least six runs: the batter who later reached base and scored and the five runs that scored with two outs.

Oh man, that message board was hilarious.

The Cubs were leading 3-0, I thought the game was over, went to the bathroom, and when I came out the score was 7, then 8 to 3.
================================================
That's a helluva bathroom break. Try more fiber.

Cubs will win tomorrow. Bank on it. Unfortunately in baseball it's usually a 50/50 affair every game, or something damn close to it when 2 good teams square off. You can't bank on anything. Basketball and Football are a little different in that regard. There, in do or die situations, the better team usually wins. Not always so in baseball. Especially in this case.
Anyway Go Cubbies!
To: Mr. Buzzcut
The whole concept of "momentum" is pointless because 50% of the time when something that theoretically should shift the "momentum" happens, the momentum DOESN'T shift.
Fortunately, that seems to have been a sports cliche of the late 80s that seems to have died; I remember announcers back then obsessing about "momentum" constantly in all sports. Barely saw a mention of it till this thread.
Take the 1975 World Series.....after Fisk's homer to win game 6, the Reds won the next game and the Series.
Is there anything that could have been MORE of a momentum shift than that homer?
To: TrappedInLiberalHell
I especially like the "being a Red Sox fan I REALLY feel for you guys right now" angle........as if that makes Cubs's fans feel any better.
To: litany_of_lies
I have a confession. This is all my fault. I decided to watch the game on TV tonight (I haven't watched or listened to any of the others). The Cubs lost because I watched them.
I have a confession. This is all MY fault.
I was the fan who interfered in that play and...hold on...there's a knock on the door...are those clubs and pitchforks outside my window? Better go see what they want............

If memory serves (and, sadly, it does!) the Sox sprung out to an early lead (3-0?) in Game 7 before returning to form. ;)
To: Mr. Mojo
I suspect that tomorrow, if a Marlin hits a fly ball in the general area of any first row seats, the fans will dive to the side so that they don't become game 7's version of tonight's fan.

I especially like the "being a Red Sox fan I REALLY feel for you guys right now" Yeah, that's like Mike Dukakis getting a sympathy call from Walter Mondale.

... though i think you are correct where baseball is concerned. It is the most individual of the team sports and "momentum" is more of a group dynamic appropos of football, basketball, hockey ...
To: John H K
Is there anything that could have been MORE of a momentum shift than that homer? True, but curses outrank momentum. It WAS the Red Sox, after all. ;)
