Why does one person like scotch, and another loathes it and likes vodka? Or one like cocaine, and another Metabolife?

As much as I oppose the WOD, there is a big difference between starting on a chemical because it was suggested by a doctor in response to chronic pain after botched surgery, and simply "liking" it.

Uh where? Doctors recommend red wine. So if someone becomes an alcoholic because the medical establishment said one or two glasses of red wine a day is good for you then is that any different?

It doesn't matter if a doctor put him on it for pain. He choose to become addicted to them and he choose not to do anything about it until he got busted for it. Those are the facts that you cannot dispute.

How so? Healthy people do not typically engage in heavy drug use. Rush may have gotten his start due to physical pain, but many do drugs to block out mental pain and anguish.

I wonder if any of you have seen "Requiem for a Dream"... The woman who was popping prescribed medication ended up no differently that a heroin addict.

I oppose the WOD, and I love Rush, but getting hooked on your original doctors prescriptions for pain are almost as rare as walking on water. Any reputable doctor will cut you off. I think we can presume Rush could afford a reputable doctor. Once you start shopping for unethical doctors or housekeepers with a connection, it is because one way or the other, you like it.

I took oxycontin last year after shoulder surgery. It is very hard to quit because if feels good, but I don't think it is any more addictive than tobacco.

You sound like Steppenwolf 2003. The dealerman who is your friend versus the pusher who is evil. What it comes down to is you, you and your own close circle of family, friends and co-workers and the smaller group in them who are willing to advise and criticise truly and wisely to who you are. Your physician may or may not be in that group. A lisense from the State is no guaranee of wisdom, and even less of how you are advised and prescribed by that medical agent.

Dittos. And furthermore, never did I hear Rush cry, ask for sympathy, or shift blame. Imust said yesterday Rush should "suck it up." I'm not exactly sure what that means, given that Rush has yet to make excuses.

What is wrong with seeking pleasure as opposed to seeking utilitarian pain relief? Does it make them less useful cogs in the machine?
