One Year After DC-area Sniper Attacks, Presidential Candidates Co-Sponsor H.R. 2038 to Renew and Strengthen Assault Weapons Ban
Washington, DC - Congressmen Richard Gephardt (D-MO) and Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) have co-sponsored H.R. 2038, a bill that will renew and strengthen the federal assault weapons ban. Their support comes one year after the DC-area sniper attacks, which killed 10 and wounded three others. The legislation would stop the gun industry from manufacturing and marketing all assault weapons, including the snipers' Bushmaster XM15 assault rifle.
Though other presidential candidates have stated their support for a strengthened assault weapons ban, Reps. Gephardt and Kucinich are the only two to co-sponsor such legislation. The current ban is set to expire September 13, 2004 unless President Bush and Congress act.
"Congressmen Gephardt and Kucinich are leaders in the fight to rid America's streets of military-style assault weapons once and for all," said Joshua Horwitz, Executive Director of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence. "We hope that other candidates will follow suit and co-sponsor tough and effective assault weapons ban legislation."
Why the Ban Needs To Be Strengthened
The 1994 ban outlaws specific models of military-style semiautomatic assault weapons. But in a willful attempt to violate the spirit of the law, the gun industry continues to manufacture "post-ban" assault weapons - guns identical to those banned except for minor cosmetic changes. The Bushmaster XM15 used in last fall's sniper attacks, for example, is a "post-ban" version of the AR15 assault rifle, which is banned under current law.
H.R. 2038 and S. 1431, its Senate companion, will not only renew the ban, but also stop the gun industry from manufacturing "post-ban" assault weapons such as the Bushmaster XM15.

Up until 1934, anyone could buy machine guns through the mail. Up until 1968, you could buy cannons and anti-tank weapons through the mail. Grenades were not illegal. Until very recently, you could walk into a store any buy explosives in several states. There did not exist any significant illegal activity with these items before they were banned to the common folk.
From the above, it seems clear that "the line" can safely be drawn somewhere above machine guns, cannons, and grenades. We are nowhere near a "reasonable" line.

US REP MARK KIRK BELIEVES HOMELAND DEFENSE WEAPONS SHOULD BE TREATED LIKE NUKES
Justifying his support for extending the ban on homeland defense weapons such as the AR-15 our own GOP Rep Mark Kirk from the liberal 10th District of Illinois says:
"Under current law many weapons are banned or heavily restricted such as nuclear explosives, missiles and heavy infantry weapons."
Mark Kirk runs as GOP, touts the fact he is US Naval Reserve "war hero" but to me he's just another useful idiot pandering to the lakefront liberals to maintain power. If you need some ass wipe, click here to read his letter in full.

The Bill of Rights guarantees the right to keep and bear arms. "Arms" are rifles. Cannons, grenades, and nuclear weapons are "ordinance".
The Bill of Rights works quite well.

"Er wait. Let me rephrase. I think it is possible to control gun violence with gun-control laws, but I also feel that would threaten the freedom of the American people. Therefore, I think both sides are right, and wrong, but again, I'm just playing devil's advocate."
The CDC just released, last week I believe, a report on the effects of gun laws. They did a meta-analysis of 51 studies in the medical literature and could not say that gun control laws decreased violent crime, IIRC.

Since you're here to learn, let me tell you about infringing on my rights to be a sportsman.
There is a sport called High Power Rifle. It's a nationally attended sport. Millions of people each year take part in it. There are thousands of matches every year, hundreds every month.
The sport requires the very rifles on your list.
By the way, welcome to FR.
To: voxdeus
Oops. I guess that meant unwelcome to FR. Too bad, maybe you could have learned something instead of trolling.

Would you be able to suggest a search strategy for finding out what pubbies in the Senate declined to sponsor the Lawful Commerce In Firearms bill? I believe that's the name of the bill to protect gun manufacturers from being sued.

Let me get this right- the law was poorly written, had no effect, did not prevent violence.
Gun manufactures obeyed the stupid law.
So now it is not the fault of the people who wrote the law, the people who were wrong, it is the fault of the people who said it wouldn't work (correct) and obeyed the law.
What we have here is a drive to punish people for entering into a conspiracy to obey the law.

S.659 is still languishing in the Senate. Its title is the Lawful Commerce in Firearms Act, IIRC. It is intended to protect firearm manufacturers from bogus lawsuits.
"Mulder" was kind and gracious enough to provide me with the hyperlink on this thread so I could figure out what pubbies declined to co-sponsor this bill. I've been lurking long enough to recognize the names of the most vigilant RKBA folks I recall. Anyone reading this whose name I didn't remember and ping, please pardon me.
FYI & FWIW this is primarily for those who live in the states or know folks who live in states of the named senators who sponsored or declined to sponsor S.659 as best as I could determine.
Republicans who declined to co-sponsor: John McCain(AZ), Lincoln Chafee(RI), Mike DeWine(OH), Peter Fitzgerald(IL), John Warner(VA) and Richard Lugar(IN). Fitzgerald declined to seek a 2nd term next year, and both Warner won re-election running un-opposed and Chafee won his first term in an overwhelmingly rat state in 2002, IIRC. I don't know if any of the rest are running next year. If five pubbies also co-sponsored, then there would be the votes for a quorum and no filibuster, as the sponsor Larry Craig has a total of 54 co-sponsors.
Democrats who were co-sponsors: Max Baucus(MT), John Breaux(LA), Tom Daschle(SD), Byron Dorgan(ND), Tim Johnson(SD), Mary Landrieu(LA), Blanche Lincoln(AR), Zell Miller(GA), Ben Nelson(NE) and Harry Reid(NV). Johnson and Landrieu won re-election last year and Daschle is up for next year. I think Lincoln won in 98. Miller declined to go for a full term. The remainder are probably also up for re-election.
I must confess I volunteered for McCain in 2000 because I thought he would be better for the RKBA than GWB. I'm not a registered pubbie. So much for my political instincts. But I think if it doesn't get wrapped up soon , then it might get entangled with the AWB.

Uzi's fire fast but having owned one years ago Uzi's suck lead. They are not that accurate even with the longer barrel. They jam a little too much for my taste. But at 200 dollars at the time it was cheap, got it in a pawn shop in '85, some Soldier needed cash. I took it on Post at the private arms range, and pulled the trigger as fast as my little finger wouold go, the range Sarg came running thinking someone had an auto. :o)

Well wait it would never work. Maybe the Coalition to speak to Space aliens, much easier to accomplish than getting Gephardt to quit with the "I had this Friend...." stories.
