BREAKING NEWS: Brushfire Threatens Structures in Santa Barbara County More than 5,500 acres are burning on both sides of highway 101, near Gaviota State Beach. Southbound and Northbound lanes are closed. All train traffic coming through the area has been canceled after a train trestle burned down in Miraposa Canyon. Fire officials have evacuated both Hollister Ranch and Gaviota State Beach. Officials tell Key News fires are burning on the Shell oil refinery grounds as well. The refinery is shut down while crews try to protect the structures. Jun 5, 2004, 22:00:00
I didn't know San Ardo produced that much crud or that what it produced was carried by train to Southern California.
Never really thought about it...
I'd say it passes by my home about 1/2 mile away from the tracks.

Maybe we will find out the cause, and maybe not.
"The oil refinery at the Mariposa Reina exit was threatened, and all railroad activity between San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara was stopped until further notice, Johnson said."
There is apparently also an oil refinery in danger.

Wow, I am bummed. My wife and I have gone camping about 5 times in the last several years at Gaviota State Beach. Hope it is ok.

Just a crazy thought here but could it possibly be that someone wants to take away from the honor and media coverage of our dear President Reagan? This just sounds too suspicious to me to happen on the heels of President Reagan's death.
S**T! I just sampled 3 miles of the center median of 101 there a few weeks back! I found a train flattened penny under that bridge with my metal detector in the evening...

Fire is about four air miles from Rancho Del Cielo. A lot of it hasn't burned since 1955, a lot of fuel there.
It's fairly windy here today in Santa Maria, temperature is 81 right now - this fire is going to be serious trouble.
