The man whose efforts led to a requirement that any Nevada tax increases have the support of at least two-thirds of all state legislators says he's proud those efforts figured in the lawmakers'special session on taxes.

"The Gibbons Tax Restraint Initiative is doing what it was designed to do and that is to keep bad ideas from getting passed,"said Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Nev., whose tax restraint initiative was approved overwhelmingly by voters in 1996.

Jim Gibbons is likely running for senate in 2004 against Harry Reid. This should get him some good press from Nevadans who don't want higher taxes!

"Jim Gibbons is likely running for senate in 2004 against Harry Reid."

I was heartened to see that Gibbons voted the right way on partial-birth abortion last week (not only did he vote for the ban, he voted against Greenwood's sham amendment that would have gutted the PBA ban). Gibbons has waffled on abortion in the past, and he needs to make sure that pro-lifers vote for him and not for the nominally pro-life Reid next November.

Gibbons should be able to eliminate Reid's better than average Dem performance in the Reno area.

I noticed that on politics1.com that Jim Gibbons name is gone as a potential candiate versus Reid leaving only:

Rich Ziser (R) - Anti-Gay Activist, Ex-Businessman & '98 Clark County School Board Candidate

I hope that his name was removed by accident when Ziser was added.

As of June 2nd Gibbons was still considering challenging Reid, and there's been no news since that I can see on Google.
