WV Poll Says Capito Has Big Lead

Staff

Charleston

The West Virginia Poll says Second District Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito has a commanding lead over democratic challenger Jim Humphreys heading into the final days of the campaign.

The West Virginia Poll, conducted last week by RMS Research for MetroNews, The Charleston Daily Mail, and WSAZ Newschannel 3, interviewed 336 likely voters in the Second District.

Fifty-three percent of those questioned say they would be more likely to vote for Congresswoman Capito on election day. Thirty-two percent of those polled said they will vote for Humphreys. Fifteen percent were undecided. The poll has a margin of error of 5.3 percent.

Of those questioned, 179 are Democrats, 117 Republicans, and 21 Independents. Thirty-five percent of the Democrats say they will vote for Capito, while 96 percent of the Republicans say they will stick with the incumbent.

The numbers show Capito has a commanding lead over Humphreys in the Kanawha Valley. Fifty-four percent of those questioned say she will pick up their vote. The numbers indicate the race is tighter in the eastern panhandle. Capito has a six percentage lead.

Congresswoman Capito came from behind two years ago to beat Humphreys. Both candidates are expected to put on a big push this week.

Leading Congressman Dick Gephardt is scheduled to visit Charleston Tuesday along with First District Congressman Alan Mollohan to campaign for Humphreys. President George W. Bush is scheduled to visit Charleston Thursday night to campaign for Capito.

I would take all WV media poll numbers that come out right now with a huge grain of salt...the Dems are playing some fairly sophisticated games.

Capito is ahead, I believe, but it is a tight race.

How many house seats does WV have? Is it 2 or 3. This lead must be a plus for Wolfe.

This is wonderful news! If you look at all the House polls lately, it doesn't look good for the dems.

Thank the good Lord for that.

WV has 3 House seats...2 Dem Incumbents...1 Republican.

I don't trust any media poll that is being used right now...not a bit.

This thing is being fought on the ground, and we are winning wherever we are getting our message out.

The whole state is geting geared up to welcome President Bush on Thursday, when he is here to stand with Jay Wolfe and Shelley Moore Capito....as well as the rest of our GOP candidates.

The timing is perfect, giving us tremendous momentum going into the final weekend of campaigning.

I agree...why would Gephardt waste a campaign stop on an unwinnable race?

I'm excited for you, E.V. I mean, I'm excited for the whole party and the whole country, but I can tell it would mean a lot to you personally to see Wolfe elected. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

No point in worrying too much about this race. Capito won her 2nd term as soon as the Dems nominated Humphreys again, as with many competitive races where the worst nominee won. It's interesting to note that she'll be the first GOP Congressperson to win a 2nd term since her dad, Arch Moore, won his next-to-last term in 1964.

You seem pessimistic about the poll about to come out. Is that read correct?

Yes...it's already out...totally unbelievable...and by that I mean 'no credibility'.

I knew it was coming and when...small sample, large percentage of Democrats, and heavily weighted to the Kanawha valley, where we are the weakest because of our lack of finances to get our message out in that urban area.

Again, it is a joke...not worth the newsprint it is printed on.

But if the Dems want to believe it and stay home, that's just dandy with me.

Rockefeller 72% - Wolfe 15%

If our Jay had simply had his name on the ballot, he would garner 30%. I'm telling you, these numbers aren't real...not even close.

I have internal polling that shows the race within 7...and that was from before some pretty serious blows to Rockefeller at the local level...mainly the publicizing of his 'F' rating from the NRA...and from before this visit by the President began to ramp up the tempo of everything here.

The Gazette is a flaming left-wing fishwrap that hates Jay Wolfe, and everything he stands for. This polling is a doctored phony snapshot.

Let me ask you a question...if this was real, and Capito was far out in front while at the same time Rockefeller was cruising to reelection by such an outlandish margin, would the POTUS be making a stop here?...I don't think so.

Maybe it is for Capito. The problem with WV is that it loves seniority, and the money it brings. But yes, the poll seems to be a bit skewed. I suspect your guy will get about 35%.

35% is what the current situation would warrant..I think you are quite insightful in your analysis....however, we are still placing our hope in our wonderful army of broken-glass Republicans to pull it off. Perhaps skewed polls like this will help us suppress what was already likely to be a light Dem turnout.

We have done everything in our power to create a sitution that would enable a miracle to occur. The problem is we have gotten zero assistance from the Republican establishment... at least until now--and even this is fairly limited in it's scope.

Nonetheless, I will give credit where credit is due. President Bush responded directly to our plea for him to come here, and I appreciate that greatly. Coddy Johnson of the WH political staff is a shining star...he deserves recognition for his belief in the grassroots. It was Coddy who believed that the President could win WV in 2000, when very few others did...and he put action to that belief in the last days of that campaign...thank God, that was what made the electoral difference.

You won't see me with very many kind words for the Senatorial Committee, though, after this campaign is through. They wrote off races before they ever got started, and demonstrated absolutely no ability to think tactically or strategically.

But today is not the time for that critique...for the next week, I will continue to focus fire where it belongs---on every DemocRAT within range of our guns.
