Beauprez leading in Colorado 7th CD
Colorado Republican Committee | 08/26/2002

Found this tidbit in a weekly talking points distributed by the Colorado Republican Committee...

According to a poll by the Tarrance Group from August 19-20, Bob Beauprez (GOP) is leading Mike Feeley (DEM) 44% to 36% for Colorado's new 7th CD (no mention of the polls MOE).

This is encouraging news given the district went for Gore in 2000 and has equal registration between Republicans and Democrats.

Any idea if this is an independent poll, or if it was commissioned by one of the campaigns? In any event, it's encouraging news. I have this race listed as a toss-up, but considered the Democrats to have a very slight edge here

Good question... The Tarrance Group is a GOP polling firm and I'm guessing that Beauprez's campaign paid for it but I've never seen the results reported in the local media (it is possible that I've missed it but I've been looking for polls for this race).

I considered this race to be a dead heat but over the last few weeks I've had the impression that Beauprez is building some momentum... he has been more visible than Feeley and there is word that President Bush may do a fundraiser with him sometime this month which may boost him in the polls (W. is very popular here in Colorado).

I'll be keeping my eye open for further polling on this race.

I've gotten to the point that I dislike seeing polls of any kind. When they show results like this one, that's just a warning to the Dems that they have to go out and lie more, or dig up more dirt, or register more dead people, etc.

Tarrance Group is a Republican polling firm. I trust all party polls with a grain of salt. This race is probably still a tossup.

It all comes down to turnout really.

generally I agree with you about party sponsored polls but, as best as I can determine, this poll was not released for general consumption. If the poll is correct, it is encouraging in that registered Republicans represent roughly 1/3 of the registered voters (1/3 are Democrats and 1/3 are independents). Given the registration breakdown, Feeley doesn't seem to have picked up many independents yet while Beauprez is starting to make headway.

If Feeley has different internal polling numbers, we should see something from their camp over the next few days. As I mentioned earlier my impression, here on the ground, is that Beauprez is starting to pull away from Feeley.

FYI. I am not calling the GOP the favorite here yet. But good to see anyway.

I saw the candidates on CSPAN campaigning. The Dem was overweight and a seemed a bit of a hack. The GOP guy was fitter looking and much smoother, and came across as very composed and friendly. FWIW.
