Republicans Just Lost a Statewide Election in Pennsylvania. What Does That Mean for the Future?
Slate ^ | Nov 4, 2025 | Molly Olmstead

Posted on 11/05/2025 7:12:58 PM PST by CondoleezzaProtege

Pennsylvania voters have rejected a Republican effort to remove three Democrats from the state Supreme Court.

The stakes of Tuesday’s election were high: Had Pennsylvanians voted to remove the justices, the court would have gone from a seven-member Democratic majority to a four-member group with a complete ideological split. The three justices’ vacant seats would not have been filled until another election at the end of 2027.

Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court regularly holds these kinds of votes for its justices. The justices are first selected in partisan elections, but at the end of their 10-year terms, voters then decide whether to extend them for another 10 in nonpartisan elections. Once in, justices rarely get voted out, but Republicans campaigned hard this year in the hopes of changing the balance of power on the state’s court.

But if the justices are booted, the seats become open again, and voters once again decide who will be placed on the court during the next election. The court currently has seven justices, two of whom are Republicans. So if the three justices on Tuesday’s ballot had been ousted, and if Republicans had then successfully replaced them with their own judges during the next election, then went on to lose those three seats, the GOP would have flipped the court.

People invariably follow mainstream media. They lived Trump’s with this and is surprised, shocked, discouraged, sidelined

He is not

For whatever reason, candidates with executive experience haven’t been the norm in Dim politics, lately. You have to go back to Carter, Dukakis, and Clinton to get presidential nominees with that kind of record. The Senate seems to be the pool that they draw from, and if that means running someone into the Senate for show...Obama, Hillary, Harris...to get them close to presidential politics, they’ll do it. What with dumbing down the electorate with immigrants and indoctrinated youth, it was supposed to be kicking into high gear when DJT upset their applecart. I’m looking for someone they can get into the Senate for two to four years, and then hype the hell out of in ‘28. I think Fetterman is a non-starter. Bootygig doesn’t seem likely to get into the Senate, and the timing doesn’t really favor AOC.L (unless JD wins ‘28, and she can take Schumer’s seat, for a run in ‘32) Any thoughts?

Our whole political system has this problem
Republicans act like Americans, comparable
to trying to herd kittens. That is rarely
sucessful.

Democrats are “Lock step” party members
that rarely go against the party.
They remind me of films I’ve seen of
Nazi troops marching in a parade for
Hitler.

Kittens against Jackbooted Automatons.
Kittens will lose or run off.

We are close to owing the Presidency. A 2028 win, and the Electoral College becomes more red in 2032.

The problem is that Liberals vote for the Party, our side votes for the Individual.

Any thoughts?

Newsom will be their nominee in 2028.

The election will be similar to the last three elections for President.

Flip a coin & make a call.

Gavin Newsom would like a word. I guess.

A judge is almost never removed on a Yes/No retention vote unless he/she has somehow been brought to the public’s attention by some personal scandal or has released some murderer who went out and murdered again.

My dad’s philosophy years and years ago on judge retention votes was to always vote NO to retain because they always got retained on a 60/40 vote. So I vote NO. Dad’s been right for decades now.

Wow. The only thing the last three elections had in common was DJT, and he won them all. I’ve thought Newsom for some time. I can see Whitler and Beshear tearing into him, though. Enough to diminish him? Who knows? If they run a white boy, they may need Whitler as a #2. Not very exotic, or likable, though. How to include the BIPOC LGBTQ factions.....?

It was not a head to head vote. They had a “yes” or “no” choice with a question worded like “do you wish to retain Judge XYZ for an additional ten year term on the Supreme Court of PA”?
There was a separate line item for each judge.

I personally think and picks are out in the Senate, to old and not radical enough and Sanders is to old... Josh Shapiro is Jewish so he is out. I think Harris is too prideful but will run again but the catch is she will choose AOC for the youth vote and she is radical enough... Then there is Gov Newscum and no idea who his VP would be, could be he might court AOC for VP.Fetterman will be primaryed out...as it is already in the works. Schumer I think will be forced out as he is hanging by a thread. For the GOP I think it will be JD and Donald John Trump Jr or could be switched around so Trump can keep Mega going...... If Trump doesn’t get a handle on this economy quickly and turns it around I doubt anyone has a chance on the GOP side...As it is the economy stupid... Then there is the unknown factor... Could be the Dems sweep in the mid terms and sweep Mega out, Trump is arrested along with his staff but all depends on what Trump does in a year’s time.

In my experience, people never really pay attention to judicial elections. They barely pay attention to other elections.

Let me clarify on my last three elections comment.

I’m only talking about the final electoral count being similar not the specifics, issues and topics of each campaign.

I just don’t see a blowout in either direction, no matter the candidates.

Is the Republican Party a "thing" anymore? Who gets fired up over "Republicans"?

MAGA is where it's at.

“Republicans won big in 2024. Most of those people went to sleep believing their work was done.”

As did the politicians who won those elections.

It means Republicans turned complacent in the last year and are now losing the advantage.
