The National Rifle Association on Monday issued a stinging rebuke of former President Donald Trump’s pick for Wisconsin governor, accusing him of misleading its members after his campaign falsely claimed the gun advocacy group had endorsed him.
Construction company co-owner Tim Michels is locked in a three-way GOP primary with former Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch and state Rep. Tim Ramthun. Michels won Trump’s endorsement in June. An endorsement from the NRA would have marked another huge win for him heading into the Aug. 9 election.
Michels’ campaign sent out a flyer that landed in mailboxes Saturday that claimed the NRA had endorsed him. Scott Meyer, a Wisconsin lobbyist who has done work for the NRA, said the group hasn’t endorsed anyone in the GOP primary and doesn’t plan to do so.
“All this came out of the blue,” Meyer said of the flyer. “Stunned is the best word to describe it. I’ve never seen this before.”
Michels’ campaign spokesman Chris Walker said in an email to The Associated Press on Monday that the claim was an “unintentional error” and has been immediately corrected with a new mailer that says Michels received an “AQ” grade on an NRA questionnaire about his stances on gun rights. Meyer said that grade indicates he answered the questions to the NRA’s satisfaction.
“Our direct mail shouldn’t have indicated that rating was an ‘endorsement,’ and subsequent communications will describe his ‘AQ rating’ from the NRA,” Walker said in the email.

I wonder which gun-grabbing Democrat the NRA plans to endorse in the general.
Love the attempt to slur and slander President Trump.
“Love the attempt to slur and slander President Trump.”
Yeah, I remember when the Bush family was perfect here on FR.
It was unreal back then the NRA had Harry Reid, of all people, on their money list.
Very bizarre headline - has Trump’s name but not the offending candidate’s name.
It’s the AP.
What were you expecting?
Great free advertising from him!!! Thank you NRA
Rebecca Kleefisch for me. Michels is the guy that lost to Feingold in 2004. He doesn’t stand a chance and he’s running a crappy campaign.
I’ve worked on major campaigns dealing with the NRA. The organization is a massive bureaucratic cluster-flop of internal posturing and backstabbing among its own staff and leaders, all of them looking to be king-makers on their own. Its ridiculous that they won’t issue mutiple endorsments when several A+ Second-Amendment candidates are running.
The NRA is no longer useful. Grifters.
The NRA is such a fine upstanding organization. They fight for our gun rights ya know.
Odd Statement!
I have been here for a long time and do not recall a period where the Bush or bush’s were perfect.
I do recall them being better, and supported, than any of the Democratic candidates who ran against them. I also remember a lot of trash talking with various members of the Democrats Underground (DU) resulting the hilarious ‘Hughes and series” comment by ne of their numbskulls.
I also remember George apologizing to the Muslims for the crusades. I also remember George’s amnesty program that gave rise Patriot movement.
Yeah, I've stopped contributing. Maybe when Wayne LaPierre finally takes a hike I'll consider becoming a member again.
NRA obviously does prefers not to alienate any Republican candidate by endorsing one now at the epense of the others. Tim Michaels shouldn’t have jumped the gun, but ... mountain/molehill.
“Love the attempt to slur and slander President Trump.”
Rove you magnificent bastard!
Michaels has the campaign won

He was a total POS, but he did get the funding for this:

Otherwise I think he talked one way and voted another.
