New York City Health Commissioner Resigns Citing Mayor’s Handling Of Pandemic

Dr. Oxiris Barbot stepped down as New York City health commissioner Tuesday citing the city’s Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio as reason for her leaving.

“I leave my post today with deep disappointment that during the most critical public health crisis in our lifetime, that the Health Department’s incomparable disease control expertise was not used to the degree that it could have been,” Barbot wrote in her resignation letter reviewed by the New York Times. “Our experts are world renowned for their epidemiology, surveillance and response work. The city would be well served by having them at the strategic center of the response not in the background.”

The Times reports that Barbot’s departure comes as escalating tensions between City Hall and the Health Department that began rising in March have begun to play out in public view. The most recent clash came over the mayor’s decision to strip the Health Department of its contact tracing duties and instead directed them under the purview of the public hospital system.

“It was time for a change. It became clear it was time for a change,” de Blasio said at a Tuesday press conference when asked about the city’s health chief leaving.

Mayor de Blasio immediately announced Dr. Dave Choskshi, who previously worked at the Louisiana Department of Health during Hurricane Katrina and served as a top health expert in the Obama administration, as Barbot’s replacement.

Months into the coronavirus pandemic, New York City remains the hardest hit with more than 230,000 total cases and more than 23,000 deaths, according to the Times.

Meanwhile, few politicians in America have achieved the same level of unpopularity as Mayor de Blasio, who mounted a futile presidential campaign last fall that failed to garner any significant support to stay in the race even close to the Iowa caucuses.

Hate to see New York City suffer. Most of the people there are fine. Its history and accomplishments are as good as unparalleled, and they could go further. Hopefully they’ll pull together and get their priorities better-aligned.

They have voted in all these idiot democrats and ruined the state for the rest of NY with their gun grabbing, high tax, baby killing, liberal politics.

They may have been great in the past but those days are long gone and you're going to be hard pressed to convince people that NYC is full of *fine* people when you look at their politics.

My sense is that the good people have been preoccupied with doing good, as in doing their jobs faithfully. Radical elements have emerged, working the political ropes, leaving the bulk of sensible people without recourse. Why paint the whole city as derelict?

Because NYC overwhelmingly votes dem to the point where it determines any election above the regional level.

Anything from the state up to federal.

That’s NOT the result of a small radical element. That’s a result of LARGE numbers of NYC folks voting democrat to the point where it just overwhelms the whole rest of the state.
