Boston’s mayor has said he supports calls to either remove or change a statue which depicts Abraham Lincoln standing over a freed slave who is crouched on his knees.

Mayor Marty Walsh has come under pressure this weekend to have the city haul away the monument after an online petition calling for the removal of the Emancipation Memorial in Park Square in downtown went viral.

As of Monday afternoon, more than 8,400 people signed the petition, which was started by a local resident from the neighborhood of Mission Hill.

Fun fact: the original in D.C. was exclusively paid for by former slaves.

Makes sense. Communism is slavery. Today’s communists hate the thought of freedom. Slavery is sooo much easier...

Lincoln should have been kneeling to the freed slaves.

Soon these assholes will get around to removing or defacing veterans memorials such as the Iwo Jima, the Unknown Soldier or the Vietnam Wall.

I can see a dem administration publicly using bull dozers to crush both into pebbles and hauled off.

No wonder there are calls for removal. Not enough bling on that slave’s wrists.

They should redo the statue with the freed slave giving Lincoln a “Polar Bear Hunt” sucker punch from the rear!

Michelle Obama said it during the 2012 campaign. “Barack has a lot of work to do to change our history and tradition”. That was overlooked by the Lame Street Media just like him say in five days we will began to transform the US. The Democrats have since taken up that goal.

A sad illustration of how utterly corrupt our education system is, both K-12 and college.

With a lengthy dedication by Fredrick Douglass which starts like this:

Friends and Fellow-Citizens: I warmly congratulate you upon the highly interesting object which has caused you to assemble in such numbers and spirit as you have to-day. This occasion is in some respects remarkable. Wise and thoughtful men of our race, who shall come after us, and study the lesson of our history in the United States; who shall survey the long and dreary spaces over which we have travelled; who shall count the links in the great chain of events by which we have reached our present position, will make a note of this occasion; they will think of it and speak of it with a sense of manly pride and complacency.

I congratulate you, also, upon the very favorable circumstances in which we meet to-day. They are high, inspiring, and uncommon. They lend grace, glory, and significance to the object for which we have met. Nowhere else in this great country, with its uncounted towns and cities, unlimited wealth, and immeasurable territory extending from sea to sea, could conditions be found more favorable to the success of this occasion than here.

We stand to-day at the national centre to perform something like a national act-an act which is to go into history; and we are here where every pulsation of the national heart can be heard, felt, and reciprocated. A thousand wires, fed with thought and winged with lightning, put us in instantaneous communication with the loyal and true men all over this country. ......................

Ironic, isn’t it?

Lincoln in this statue appears to be bidding the slave to stand up.

“ Lincoln in this statue appears to be bidding the slave to stand up.”

That is exactly what is depicted. You can’t expect the foaming-at-the-mouth mob to realize that.

When are they going to go after the Confederate Memorial at Arlington? That statue has a “Mammy” on it, watching her massa going off to war.

I could see where that might get a little “sensitive.”

Since the Iwo Jima and Vietnam War monuments (and Korean War monument for that matter) are not heavily guarded, defacing them (like recently happened at the World War II, Lincoln, and Jefferson monuments) are certainly possible. As for the Tomb of the Unknowns, got a feeling the US Army Third Infantry Regiment, which closely and faithfully guards the tomb 24/7/365, might have something to say about that.

Frankly, having now seen a photograph of it, the Emancipation statues (the duplicate in Boston and the original in DC) could probably be revised to depict the freed slave in a more equal stance. (Since he does appear to be grovelling,) Perhaps with both standing; the discarded chains on the ground at their feet; and shaking hands (or something).

Problem is, that if the decision is made to replace the statue, the politicians involved, seeking to avoid criticism and responsibility, would turn over the process to a panel of “distinguished community leaders and art experts.” The panel, in turn seeking to avoid criticism, would turn the redesign into a contest involving submission of proposed new designs, and maybe require the work actually be done by a black sculptor.

Maybe the ultimate result would be a repeat of heroic “socialist realism” style of the truly monumental statue of Martin Luther King at his memorial in Washington DC. (That statue, ironically, was executed by a mainland Chinese sculptor since that is the only place in the world where truly epic scale figurative statues are still being produced.)

Or, quite possibly, the replacement would not be figurative at all. Maybe it could be abstract, in the style of Picasso or, to be really daring, Dali. Then, future generations could ask “WTF were they thinking! Couldn’t they just put a simple statue on human scale?” - and thereby close the circle back to the beginning of the process.

The “process,” like all government processes, would require years to execute. In the meantime, the “problematic” Emancipation statutes would be taken down to protect them from vandalism. This would allow the politicians to virtue signal their empathy.

My only wish is that they would leave the empty pedestals, still damaged, covered with the graffiti, and with an explanatory plaque, so the future generations could marvel at what they “accomplished.” Now, imagine what Richmond’s “Avenue of Monuments” would look like if this were the practice after removing all the problematic statues there.
