The 72-year-old former Republican presidential nominee has isolated himself from Republicans in the Senate, in his home state and across the country by occasionally — but strongly — criticizing President Donald Trump, including the president's efforts to enlist the aid of foreign governments to probe a leading political opponent.
"By all appearances, the President's brazen and unprecedented appeal to China and to Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden is wrong and appalling," Romney tweeted earlier this month.
In recent weeks, the senator's acts of rebellion against the commander in chief have been flagrant: from publicly confirming "Pierre Delecto" as the secret identity he used to counter Trump on Twitter to bashing Trump's Syria policy on the Senate floor to positioning himself on the front edge of any move by GOP lawmakers to break away and either censure the president or vote to remove him from office if the House follows through with impeachment.
While that House-side inquiry has put a heat lamp on Republican senators from states where voters aren't thrilled with the president's actions — particularly swing-state lawmakers who are up for re-election in 2020 — Romney's criticism of Trump hasn't prompted those colleagues to follow him into the political no-man's land of finding fault with both the president's conduct and the divisiveness of impeachment.

That article was actually worth the full read. Your excerpt didn’t include the description of what Romney’s opposition of Trump has cost him, but the article discusses it.
I have no idea what Romney think he’s accomplishing but he would have a hard time getting elected to enough term in the Senate, let alone ever becoming president.
As someone else already suggested on this thread, Trump is probably costing Romney money. No other reason makes sense, not to me anyway.

As for what he’s accomplishing, it’s simple: sabotage. He sabotaged the MA GOP and buried it as Governor. He sabotaged Sarah Palin in 2006 to help assure a Zero first term (as did McQueeg). He ran as a ringer to sabotage any hopes of a Conservative nominee in 2012 to hand Zero a second term. He recruited and ran Egg McMuffin to take votes away from Trump in 2016 to try to hand the election to Hillary. He is similarly working to sabotage Trump for 2020. He’s a left-wing Derp State operative.

I think think this article is demeaning to Romney, and intentionally so. For some reason they wanted to paint him as a weakling. They also chose a very unflattering picture of him.
NBC is definitely not giving him the McCain treatment.
Once again, the pubbies have failed to control the narrative.
To continue to allow the lefturds to couch this mess as Trump seeking dirt on a political rival is cowardly. They should be pushing back at EVERY opportunity. They should be telling any and all that Trump was following the law, asking foreign leaders (friend and foe, alike) to review, investigate, and resolve any and all criminal activity that impacts the US and US interests, anywhere in the world.
The fact that this has caught up Biden and others is only incidental, here. Biden as a politician was never the target for Trump. The criminal activity is the target. Biden and the other players are caught up in this only because of their own choices and perfidy; not because they stand in opposition to Trump and his plans for America. That is merely happenstance.
As long as the pubbies fail to control the narrative, it will be a painfully uphill battle, always.
And, again, they prove themselves incapable, or unwilling, to advance a conservative Nation.
