The negativity among Democratic voters must be countered if they are to deny the president a second term
Elizabeth Warren was in New York this week, on the stump in front of large crowds in Washington Square Park. The contender for the Democratic party presidential nomination talked about corruption in the White House and the need for sweeping, dramatic change; she repeated her proposal, if elected, to impose a 2% tax on the countrys highest earners and she namechecked an early-20th-century labour movement spearheaded by women. After the rally, people stood in line for an hour to take photos with her. All of which invited only one possible response: I think Donald Trumps going to win.
Electoral pessimism on the left in the United States is a finely balanced game that, depending on your view, acts either as a check to complacency or a self-defeating hedge that guarantees the very result its seeking to avoid. For many, predicting a second term for Trump goes back to the experience of watching George W Bush win a second election when John Kerry was a strong favourite. Hope is all well and good, but what about superstition?
The difficulty comes, of course, when this gloominess infects the coverage of the candidates, giving rise to the sort of dithering analysis that seems to hand the other side ammunition. A New York Times article this week unpacked Warrens critical vulnerability too elite-seeming to the white working class just as fellow contender Kamala Harris is deemed too mainstream for the far left, and Bernie Sanders too far left for the middle. The exception to this is Joe Biden who, while being a million times better than Trump, is so uninspiring a candidate, no one can even stir themselves to predict his defeat....

“just as fellow contender Kamala Harris is deemed too mainstream for the far left”
WTF??
Democrats
Make your time
All your base are belong to us!

Someone sent them up the bomb.

The Guardian doesn’t understand how liberals roll, it’s never about optimism. If they’re happy and optimistic (or whatever passes for it among idiots), they’re home getting stoned. That’s not how you win elections. What the liberal establishment does is manufacture the opponent into a frightening boogeyman and tell the base, “If you’re not out beating the drum, THIS is what you’ll elect through your apathy!!”
It’s not the carrot with them, it’s the stick. This is why the liberal establishment didn’t legalize gay marriage when they had both houses and the presidency. The lib establishment doesn’t want them home playing house and picking out his & his towels, they want the homos on the street mad as hell and kicking their friends in the @$$ to go vote.
I think it would be hilarious for conservatives to set up faux “safe zones” for Democrats for if they lose the election, with things like:
1) Suicide counseling. (Okay, this could mean two things.)
2) Soft pastel, padded “weeping” rooms, with stuffed toys to hug.
3) Free hugs from undocumented minority transgender Muslims.
4) Life size Kevlar Trump plushies they can hit, kick, bite, or even stab.
I’m sure there are other things we could think up.
Can’t you just picture Biden reciting the ZeroWing into, with his teeth falling out and blood coming out of his eye?
Epic, I tell ya
“...Joe Biden who, while being a million times better than Trump”
LOL
That is correct. No you can't.
Well stated.
Quite the intellectually challenged analysis of a typical fidiot Brit. The Guardian needs to look in their own back yard and admit that their Sun has set for good and England is dead.
Its starting to dawn on even the commies of the Manchester Guardian that the Donald is going to cruise to victory again.
Oh the Guardian hasn’t been lost at all. Just their way of whipping up the opposition. Call it foreign meddling. Because that is what it is.
Agree, they’re attempting to affect our politics.
Clarity, youve nailed it !
