Before any of them takes the debate stage on Tuesday and Wednesday, the 2020 Democratic candidates will already have put in dozens of hours each preparing. But heres what they need to understand: Nothing they do to prepare for the primary debates will feel remotely similar to when the nominee faces Donald Trump in a debate.
My perspective on this is unique: I was assigned the role of playing Trump during Hillary Clintons general election debate prep in 2016. His stand-in. Her sparring partner. The ball machine. Over 17 years of working for her, Ive argued with and annoyed Hillary plenty. But this time, I was supposed to. And without question, she did the debates right. They were her most successful three days between the high of accepting the nomination and the low of Election Day.
To prepare myself for her grueling debate prep, I watched the 15 Republican primary debates and forums in which Trump participated three times each: once the whole way through; a second time focusing entirely on the exchanges he was part of; a third time with the sound off to watch his mannerisms and body language. I might know his debating styleif you want to call it thatbetter than anyone on the planet (aside from Hillary Clinton, of course). These are the qualities that make Trump such a tough opponent in a debate, despite the fact that he is possibly the worst debater in presidential history. If Democrats are serious about nominating a candidate who can beat Trump, these are also the qualities that their nominee should be able to respond toand how. What better time to start figuring that out than now?

Phillipe Reines is a gigantic gargantuan fool.
If he was truly the one advising Fat Bottomed Girl, then it is no wonder that she lost!
Great article Phil.
She lost.
Reines puts the douche in douchenozzle.
So you have her the questions in advance, that’s a good way to win Cheat, but we already knew Hillary was a liar,a cheat and a traitor.
As for the new batch of candidates,I can tell you how to go about winning, being a candidate that does not hate your country, they all fail in that area,as for liars and cheats and America haters, they all excel
And yet, he's your President, and going to be for another term.
LOL! Hilary LOST all the debates. What does this loser know?
Trump won the debates, and is your President, not because of his debate style but because of his message, his vision, and his plan of action.
This is not surprising because President is a master of the intuitive and he is more like a military general in a war than politician in a debate. In war, its axiomatic that no plan survives contact with the enemy so a good general always adapts his plan to the enemys response and reactions as the situation evolves.
President Trump inflames plotters and plodders because, given that President Trumps responses are reactive, adaptive and situational, no one can predict precisely what the president will do as a scenario unfolds, probably not even the president himself.
Raines may act like President Trump but he cant be Trump because he can imitate the style but not the substance
Yup, you are certainly earning your keep when you point to DeBlasio as the gold standard.
Note the allegation of constant lying by President Trump; but, not the slightest hint about what awful untruths about his opponents he may have spewed?
And, the author missed the most important of the Presidents skills: jujitsu master.
Good to know that the Clown Car Kids are being led around by these kinds of political masterminds.
Unlike his candidate who came unglued every time she was knocked even slightly off script.
No D, R or I!
your observations are right. I found the article to boring to finish. Obviously the writer doesn’t comprehend that if it’s rehearsed, it will come across as rehearsed.
The problem with professional politicians is they can’t be authentic. Authenticity is part of Donald Trump’s persuasiveness.
Cool story, bro.
Given the fact that "presidential debates" are nothing but a total construct of television, designed as a TV show around the delivery of "gotcha" questions and glib one-liners, why would President Trump bother to even attend?
Why allow the enemy to determine and control the venue for this supposed battle?
It's not as if he hasn't or can't make his feelings and/or policies known to the American people without the assistance of the MSM.
Go open up the history of Hillary and try to write a one-page resume of actual accomplishments. It’s no more than a 3x5 inch card that contain seven lines. The last line is....wife of Bill Clinton. She’s the weakest candidate in forty years for the Democratic Party to run for President.
He’s a punk extrodinar.
Mrs. Clinton didn’t want to do the hard work of campaigning, and it showed.
It is the nature of modern life, the notion that somehow, anyone is entitled to the prestige and the accouterments of success, without actually doing those things that are required to get there. This is a very “liberal” idea. Everyone wants to say, wear a flight suit, Aviator sunglasses, and a big watch. But they don’t want to go to West Point or the Air Force Academy and study fluid dynamics. They want to look cool wearing scrubs and a stethoscope, but they sure as hell don’t want to study about mitochondria and ATP and enter Residency and work their ass off 18 hours a day. Television hasn’t helped, they constantly see people with no particular job maintaining studio apartments and lounging around in a city with stratospheric rents.
Politics at the national level, Mrs Clinton seemed to think she was entitled to the office, simply because she was married to a president. I mean, I guess. What are her particular qualifications? Does she have a knack for politics? Is she likeable? Charismatic? Oh sure, she managed to collect credentials, but that’s not the same thing. I always detected an air of arrogance. She thinks of herself as a kind of royalty. And therefore actually campaigning - pressing the flesh, she didn’t like that too much.
He trained her and she lost? Thanks Philippe!
LOSER!
