The White House and Republican senators sought compromise Tuesday on limiting presidents' powers to unilaterally declare national emergencies, as chances improved that President Donald Trump might avoid a long-expected rejection by Congress of his effort to divert billions more for building barriers along the Mexican border.
As a Thursday showdown vote in the Senate neared, GOP Sens. Mike Lee of Utah, Thom Tillis of North Carolina and others were talking with the White House about related legislation that would curb the ability of presidents to declare future emergencies. If Trump would commit to signing a bill handcuffing future emergency declarations, more GOP senators might support his border emergency declaration in Thursday's vote.

Tillis and the Bush League Republicans are getting nervous that they might be thrown out of office if they do not get behind border security.
Why should the President give political cover to Never Trump Senators? He has the votes to sustain a veto so let’s see who opposes him and get rid of them. His declaration of an Emergency on the border is in conjunction with his duties as Commander in Chief not an end run around Congress as his detractors have framed it. It is they who have shirked their duty to the Constitution and the oath they swore to protect it in the name of power politics.
Hope POTUS tells ‘em to take a hike. Then vetoes the joint resolution. then let them try and override.
If the Bush League Republicans band together to override, they have more than enough votes in the Senate.
They do not in the House.

POTUS surrendering executive power sounds totally insane. I can’t fathom what Trump is up to here other than placating the open borders GOP donor base for 2020.

I agree. POTUS makes a deal with Lee and Tillis there is no guarantee Murkowski, Collins, Alexander and somebody like McSally still won’t torpedo it. I assume Lee is Romney’s stalking horse here. He’s been nothing but Mittem’s poodle since Romney arrived on the scene. I wonder if Mitt stuck him on top of his car in a cage?

Mike Lee and Rand Paul are so pathetic. Obvious national emergency at the border, and they are taking on the president. Assclowns.
Well then, we are off to the races with wall building, that will dwarf the previous program.
About 40 miles have been built so far, but this will likely make it about 400 more in the pipeline - top of the line stuff, where it is needed most. It is going to take a bite out of crime.
I would expect a minimum of three months for bidding, but more likely six months - after that, there should be a rain of contract awards.
Work generally starts about 10 weeks after award. As we go into the election season, there is going to be a massive amount of barrier being built, and places that already have had their’s completed will be showing reduced crime rates.
We’re being flimflammed. No one wants to stop the invasion or build the wall. More kabuki theater. We’re staring at permanent rat rule from here on out, guys. Pocahontas could beat Trump in 2020.
Let’s game this out.
Trump committs to this. The house makes their own version, which is catered 100% to the democrats. Then in conference committee what comes out is again favorable to dems. Trump stuck supporting it.

President Trump is wise enough to see through this move by the never Trumpers. These vermin must be allowed to join the Dims, so the voter gets to see them for what they are. Can’t wait until the next election to watch the nevertrumpers get their just reward.
Paul Ryan is the reason it never happened. That creep was owned by the Koch brothers.
He shouldn’t have to do it. They should just support their president.
But if there is legislation, maybe the GOP can do what the Dems often do and add poison pills to the bill that prevent the next Democrat president from declaring a National Emergency over their pet projects - global warming, gun control, etc.
This is more political B.S. from the Pubs. There is already a handcuff on future presidents in keeping with the concept of a balance od power. The declarations must be ratified by Senate if I remember correctly. That is enough. These pubs are trying to save face and power.
He should rip their asses up today. More illegals were caught last month alone then all the soldiers killed in the Vietnam war. Over a third in size of the forces at the D-day invasion of Normandy. These traitors no longer represent us. They are all Sea Island conspiracy globalist.
