University of Virginia Center for Politics Director Larry Sabato joins MSNBC's 'MTP Daily' with host Chuck Todd to discuss the Republicans struggling in states Trump won in 2016.
Sabato said Trump is in trouble in the Midwest, a part of the country where he did well in 2016, and it "seems to be flipping" in the midterm year. He said the states he carried, it appears, to elect Democratic Senators.
"Even if the Republicans hold the Senate given the very pro-Republican math that exists, President Trump is in trouble in some of these states," Sabato said. "He's fallen considerably as a whole."
"This also reminds us that 2016 was a choice," he said. "It wasn't simply that people decided to vote for Donald Trump in a vacuum. Many of them were voting against Hillary Clinton. Maybe you dispute the premise of it, but essentially it's a two-pronged decision."
Chuck Todd agreed with the premise and said the media made the mistake of believing the 2016 election was a "referendum on Trump when it was actually more of a referendum on [Hillary Clinton]."

I hope they are both wrong, as wrong as the 2016 election prediction.
Surrender the “Blue” name Commie Reds.
BTW, Sabato revealed himself no better than your typical paid pollsters in the last election cycle.
Take his analysis with a grain of salt.
Clinton 322
Trump 216
That was Sabato’s prediction in 2016.
Yeah, Trump is in trouble. Look at all those sad rallies of his where only 300 or so people show up, most of them probably paid party operatives.
Things are looking so bad for the Republicans this midterm election that I don’t even see much point in voting...

How can the president have “fallen considerably as a whole” while his approval numbers are inching up? This makes no sense to me - how can a country vote out someone who has miraculously turned the economy around in less than 2 years? Lots of jobs, income growth....people should be crawling to vote Republican.
Maybe in their vacuum in Virginia . . .
yeah Larry after blowing 2016 so badly, you might want to dial it in. Blow 3 elections in a row this badly why would anyone, other then CNN, ever take you seriously again?
Day of the 2016 presidential election: Larry Sabato predicting on Fox (you can see it on YouTube): “For Trump to be elected something GIANT has to happen. Hillary: 326 electoral votes”. Mr. Sabato’s crystal ball apparently has cataracts.
The second Kavanaugh was confirmed the entire MSM pivoted back to blue wave. What are the fundamentals Larry? What supports blue wave other than dem rage?
Most of the polls I am looking at show things trending away from the democrats. And dont hand me that the Senate is different poop. The Senate races are trending because of overall voter enthusiasm picking up for the GOP. Like that wont translate to the house races.
Maybe it’s rat fake news.
For about a decade, everyone felt that Larry had some ‘magic’ on predictions. In 2016, he’s basically been proven dramatically wrong. On the House, there is no Red or Blue wave....I think it mostly just remains the same. On the Senate...at least three Democratic seats to be taken as a minimum...maybe up to six.
Okay Crystal Balls. We will see.
Sabato and Todd, unloveable losers.
>> On the Senate...at least three Democratic seats to be taken as a minimum...maybe up to six.
You mean stolen. < /s >
We will find out in about 4 weeks.
You wouldn’t believe what a sanity vacuum Charlottesville is.
One of my daughter’s lives there and is one of 12 known conservatives in town.
It’s Berkeley East. San Francisco without the human waste. A living breathing Star Wars Bar scene.
This is the environment Sabato lives in. One bereft of the opportunity to see or even know anyone who doesn’t think in lockstep.
