Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp (R) completed his surprise comeback on Tuesday, claiming the Republican nomination for governor after winning late endorsements from President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.
Kemp, serving his second term as secretary of State, bested Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle (R) in a low-turnout runoff two months after Cagle finished first in the primary, the Associated Press reported.
Cagle called Kemp to concede the race about an hour-and-a-half after polls closed, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
In the end, the contest wasn't even close. With 36 percent of the vote reporting, Kemp had taken 69 percent. Cagle finished with 32 percent.
The results are a reversal from the May 22 primary, when Cagle finished first with 39 percent of the vote. Kemp, less well-known and funded, took about 26 percent of the vote in the primary, while four others split the remainder.
Kemp will now face Democratic nominee Stacey Abrams, a former minority leader in the Georgia statehouse and the first African-American woman to be nominated by a major party to run for governor.
Cagle, who had support from term-limited Gov. Nathan Deal (R) and the National Rifle Association, appeared headed for the nomination early on, even as polls during the runoff showed Kemp closing the gap.
But days before voters headed to the polls, President Trump offered Kemp an unexpected endorsement on Twitter.
Brian Kemp is running for Governor of the great state of Georgia. The Primary is on Tuesday. Brian is tough on crime, strong on the border and illegal immigration, Trump wrote last week. He loves our Military and our Vets and protects our Second Amendment. I give him my full and total endorsement.
Over the weekend, Pence campaigned with Kemp at a rally in Macon.
The endorsement, seemingly out of left field, had Republican officials scratching their heads.
Trump apparently arrived at his decision to back Kemp after talking with Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue, himself a former Georgia governor, some of these officials said. Others pointed to Nick Ayers, Pences chief of staff, a long-time political operative from Georgia who briefly considered running for governor himself. Ayers has denied involvement in Trumps endorsement.
If he concedes then wins the vote does he forfeit his win or is it like poker that no matter what a player says it is the actual cards that decide.
What am I missing? Why would he concede?
Worse. Rachel Maddow is lying to himself.
Not sure what you are talking about. Who conceding what and what votes?
Because it’s a blowout at roughly 70% Kemp, 30% Cagle with 62% of precincts reporting. Cagle may win 3 counties in Georgia.
Kemp over Cagle 69% to 31% with 62% of precincts reporting as of 9:12pm.
[ Is Rachel Maddow lying to me? ]
I don’t see how. Rachel did predict Hillary winning the Presidency in 2016. She would have to be part of the fake new liberal media to be wrong.
Before the vote count had got very far the loser called on Kemp to concede. Shortly thereafter the vote vote count that had started out with him ahead went radically against him.
Watch the money come in from places like Nepal to support Abrams this fall.
Bottom line: Trump backed Brain Kemp literally politically slaughtered Casey Cagle gaining a 70% winning victory margin. Kemp will become the next Governor of Georgia.
A close look at the weak, ineffective performance by four Democrats in two House runoff elections does not bode well for the Democrat Party in Georgia this coming November.
End of story...Georgia stays “Bright RED” this coming November and POTUS Trump and VP Pence keep on winning.
Before the vote count had got very far the loser called on Kemp to concede. Shortly thereafter the vote vote count that had started out with him ahead went radically against him.
Yeah all that extra money sure helped Hillary’s well-oiled machine.
I’m thinking Race Bannon will replace Trump.
106.7 FM radio here in Atlanta has quite a conservative bent. The on-air guys already started in on Abrams. Some of the jokes were priceless.
Thanks for the link. Kemp BUMP!
An idea to throw out there for discussion
Pence turns down VP slot in 2020 to be with his family. Nikki Haley runs as VP.
Haley the First Women President in 2024
And there was a barge load of cash from all compass points backing John Ossoff here over Karen Handel last November. That worked oh so well, too. We’ll bleed them dry!
Another good link.
As governor, I will protect Stone Mountain and historical monuments in Georgia from the radical left. We should learn from the past, not attempt to re-write it.
