The former chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee cautioned today that his party is "whistling past the political graveyard" if not concerned about midterm elections.
So far, 27 House GOP incumbents have declared that they're not seeking re-election, compared to 15 Democrats.
"When the American people give you a majority, the control of the House, the Senate and the presidency, they expect you to do something with it," Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.) told CNN, saying the party racked up "minor" wins until a major score with tax reform. "And I think over time that will help us a great deal, but look: No one's had a good midterm since 2002."
"I think you're whistling past the political graveyard if you think you're going to escape that challenging environment," he said. "...The other side is already mobilized and energized. Not much you can do to change that. So you have to give your own people incentive to go out and vote. I think we did that in December. But we need to continue on that track and frankly then we need to work with the Democrats where we can on things like infrastructure."

I’m thinking that the GOP establishment WANTS to lose in 2018, just to spite Trump.
Its not like they are doing anything to shore up the base.
That said, the do-nothing GOP does not deserve to win...BUT THEY WILL. The GOP wins in 2018 because the democrats are so very pathetic.
Congress accomplished very little since Jan 2017 (tax reform bill the exception), all the meaty stuff were achieved by Trump E.O.s
Their top priority is to appear to be bipartisan, i.e. compromise, compromise, compromise........
Both parties want DACA and amnesty. That’s the immediate problem of the first 6 months of 2018.
Once that (DACA and amnesty) is done, GOP is officially and truly past the graveyard.
The GOP continues to refuse to get behind the president and acts afraid. Makes a guy wonder if he shouldn’t pick up his chips and find another game.
Yes the polls say Democrats have a 95% chance of losing only 8 Senate and 15 House seats. The GOP should be worried. Ha ha ha ha go away dope.

Those pickups may be optimistic. However, GOP will pick up seats in the Senate and hold on to the majority in the House.
It all hinges on who they nominate I think. Right now the Dems seem to have the edge in recruiting candidates I think. The GOP needs to work on that.

You guys never told me, when I ran for this seat that some day I was going to have to do something. Why, if I do something, a lot of people won't like me.
Obama's Recovery Act was a great program - pay construction contractors to park idled construction equipment around various public sites and get paid lots of money for it. Some money actually went to workers, but most of it was doled out to the big guys to do not very much - typical crony capitalist program dressed up as a socialist jobs program. [Can you use socialism and job in the same sentence?]

Democrats for years have said Arizona was about to tip in their direction, and those hopes grew with President Trump in office — but the early evidence suggests they are struggling to grow.
The latest numbers from the state’s voting rolls show that while neither party is doing particularly well in winning over voters, Democrats have lagged behind, even as both parties gear up for a marquee U.S. Senate race and several crucial House contests next year.
The same trend is playing out in Florida, Pennsylvania and other battleground states where Democrats should have been growing their numbers in the age of Mr. Trump, but instead are stumbling.
They have lost 12,000 registered Democratic voters in Arizona since the presidential election, bringing the number down to 1.2 million. Republicans have lost just 1,000 voters and stand at nearly 1.4 million in the state.
Enrique Gutierrez, a spokesman for the state Democratic Party, chalked up the numbers to a cyclical trend and predicted support would pick up as the midterm elections approach.

Especially when as I understand it, the cornerstone of the infrastructure project is a big, beautiful wall.

If you really want to get the base out, Cole, forget the infrastructure and use brass knuckles and hobnailed boots to get meaningful immigration reform in place—a wall, mandatory e-verify, end of chain migration, visa lottery. “refugee” immigration, etc. But you already know that but don’t support it, do you?
Not to mention the Roy Moore strategy will now be directed at the GOP. Expect their past to be trolled endlessly and women they never heard of making accusations.
