Whether you voted red or blue, clearly you can see that Team Trump had a rough launch. Failure (so far) to replace Obamacare, daily Russian probe distractions and West Wing infighting are three most notable examples. But, I believe all three are rooted in one simple and temporary cause: Donald Trump didn't expect to be elected President.
Please know my source here is not some anonymous bureaucrat or wishful-thinking Liberal pundit. Mr. Trump said that. Those who attended his final victory rally in December at Ladd Stadium might remember he told us that he rented a relatively small Manhattan ballroom election night because he was expecting to just deliver a short concession speech and go home. But, the voters had other plans.
That's why Republicans have stumbled so badly on Obamacare. They simply didn't have a fully vetted plan ready to replace it. Previously, it was easy for them to pass bills to repeal it. Everyone knew Mr. Obama would veto them. So they didn't have to get into the weeds to agree on a replacement.
The Russian probe never would have happened either if Trump's people really thought they'd win. Attorney General Jeff Sessions or the President's son-in-law Jared Kushner wouldn't have gotten caught near a bottle of Russian dressing if they thought any casual and innocent Russian contact would come back to haunt them like this.
A key reason for the current White House shakeup is that Trump only had a few weeks to cobble together his inner circle. Remember, Trump was out campaigning hard in those all-important swing states while Hillary was back home in Chappaqua fine-tuning her transition that was not to be.
Fortunately for us Republicans, all three issues will likely go away because time is on our side. We have well over a year before the midterm elections to repeal and replace Obamacare. Why would anyone think legislation that affects all Americans' health care and one fifth of our national economy could pass easily? There are just too many moving parts for a quick fix.
The Russian probe is rapidly becoming moot because there is simply no real "collusion" to uncover. Sessions' and Kushner's recent and equally candid testimony clearly demonstrated that.
West Wing infighting has not only been routine for most administrations, we've had much worse from the start. Remember, our first Treasury Secretary, Alexander Hamilton, ended up on the wrong end of Aaron Burr's gun and Lincoln's rancorous "team of rivals" had their own civil war raging. New Chief of Staff, General John Kelly clearly has the right stuff to whip Trump's team into shape.
Donald Trump's election represents a radical departure from business as usual inside the D.C. beltway. That's precisely why the American people elected him president. Other key initiatives like simplifying our taxes, draining the bureaucratic swamp, improved border security and strengthening our military will also take years, not months. Remember, it took Mr. Obama eight years to run America into the ground. It will take at least one full term to get us back on track. For anyone to think this transition could be smooth or that major policy initiatives could be enacted quickly is simply naive.
It's equally naive to think that the President had a master plan ready to solve all of our nation's problems quickly. The man told us himself - right here in Mobile - that he didn't even expect to get the job to do it. As St. Teresa of Avila said: "patience achieves everything." That is equally true in the not so saintly halls of the White House.
If you really want to see what a candidate who didn’t expect to win looks like, look at McCain. Trump wasn’t anything like him.
You mean like the disappointment of waiting for all the leeches to start hitting the links that keep FR on line???
Do sumpin' useful....
Me too. I love Sessions but his recusing was a self inflicted act of stupidity.
The pubbies always act 'by the rules', while the demonRATS make the rules.
Look at Nunes and that pencil necked demonRAT on the house intelligence committee. Disgusting.
I knew Trump would win, how is it that he didn’t know?
IF Trump really said that, it surely was in jest.
