A new poll shows Republican Ed Gillespie and Democrat Ralph S. Northam tied in the November race for governor, a significant improvement for Gillespie over a poll last month showing him trailing Northam by 8 points.
They each have support from 44 percent of Virginia voters, with Libertarian Cliff Hyra at 3 percent and another 9 percent undecided, according to a Monmouth University poll released Monday. A Quinnipiac University poll in June had Northam up by 8.
Monmouth University's Polling Institute also found that low approval ratings for President Donald Trump may be hurting Gillespie, because if Trump were not a factor some Northam voters would swing to undecided.
"A small but crucial portion of Northam's support is coming from voters who are primarily anti-Trump," Patrick Murray, director of the polling institute, said in a press release. "Unless one of the candidates breaks out with a clear advantage on Virginia-centric issues, the president could wind up as a decisive factor in the outcome."
Voters said health care was the top issue they wanted Northam and Gillespie to address.
Republicans were elated by the poll and said it countered the idea that the GOP had not rallied around Gillespie after he narrowly lost a June primary to Corey Stewart, who ridiculed him during their campaign.

When the liberal rags are pulling for Gillespie.
The VA GOP couldn’t stop a federal judge from stealing a Republican seat and ordering it redrawn to elect a 2nd Black Democrat.
McAuliffe probably has sufficient votes stashed away to ensure Northam pulls it out.
BTW, it was awful to watch President Trump having to sit beside McAuliffe during the commissioning of the U.S.S. Gerald R. Ford Saturday morning.
It’s a shame what has happened to the Old Dominion with that Clinton crony as governor and two terrible senators in Kaine and Warner.
He is a traditional, conservative Catholic. Not much stylin’ going on! :^)
As a voter in suburban Richmond I intend to vote for Gillespie as will my wife...most people don’t even think about things such as redistricting in spite of the fact that our Republican House of Delegates saved us from the worst of the Punk’s schemes.
Do you have a link to that debate? I supported Stewart in the Primary. I was at an event where Stewart made it clear with Mrs. Gillespie (Virginia Women for Trump birthday event at the Trump Hotel) that he wants a unified party and he wants to win. Thanks so much if you can provide a link.
Very important race because this governor will preside over legislative redistricting in 2021. The legislature is heavy Republican but not heavy enough to overcome vetoes of a Democrat.
Great point. I’d forgotten that additional important issue.
If you think and Dem is better than a RINO, think of which party will hold committee chairs. Which party do you want to be the majority in the Senate Judiciary Committee? It the Reps win, Trump gets his judicial nominees passed. If the Dems win, he won’t.
Judges last at least a generation.
Now.....who do you want to win?
Hello, Mom. I found this with a simple search string. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EM6gb1h2_Bo
I did not actually watch the debate. I heard Gillespie speak at a Leadership Institute event on July 4. He was pushing one conservative button after another.
Thank you! I sometimes attend that event — missed it this year. I think Corey Stewart helped move Gillespie to the right.
I would prefer that he win and I will vote for him, but I can’t get remotely excited about him. I’m sure he’s not firing up the base.
A great public service, if so. Gillespie was awesome at the Soiree.
Not a matter of surrender, it is a reality.
Tonight’s email from Ed Gillespie:
HokieMom,
Saturday was my first debate with Democrat Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam and I made the case that we can make Virginia number one in the country when it comes to our economy.
I also made clear the big differences between my Democrat opponent and me:
He wants Virginians to pay more in taxes and has a long record of supporting of tax and fee increases, but I want a 10% across the board tax cut for all Virginians — the first in four decades.
He wants Virginia to have sanctuary cities and give drivers licenses to illegal immigrants, but I will never let sanctuary cities come to Virginia and will not give legal identification to those who are here illegally.
He wants to keep Terry McAuliffes unconstitutional infringements on our Second Amendments in place and add more restrictions, but I will undo the McAuliffe-Northam Administrations executive orders and be a strong supporter of our individual, Constitutional right to keep and bear arms.
He wants Virginias economy to get worse by supporting a $15 per hour minimum wage, Obama-style clean power rules, and not working with the federal government on key projects, but my proposals will help grow the economy and add over 50,000 good-paying, full-time, private sector jobs.
On issue after issue, Ralph Northam made it clear that his only plan is to come up with a plan. He has no concrete proposals on the issues facing Virginians and is more interested in leading the Resistance to President Trump than leading our Commonwealth.
I look forward to continuing to make this clear contrast in our records and visions in our upcoming debates.
Sincerely,
Ed Gillespie
I briefed Gillespie on immigration in a one on one meeting lasting an hour while he was running for senator against Warner. He is part of the Jeb Bush school on immigration unless he has had a dramatic epiphany over the past few months. He ignored my advice and lost narrowly. Dave Brat listened and won.
I know and have worked with Corey. I cannot believe that Gillespie sounds like Corey on immigration. As far as I can ascertain, Corey has not endorsed Gillespie.
Ken Cuccinelli got screwed by the GOPe, the same ones who screwed Jeff Frederick. It was not only Bolling, but others like Hager.
I moved out of Fairfax County in 2015 to move to SC. I was active in GOP politics for over 20 years and watched VA go from red to purple to blue. VA will vote Dem for Presidential elections for the next generation due to changing demographics. Winning a statewide election is becoming almost impossible. The only possibility is low Dem turnout in off years.
Do you have a link for a Gillespie speech on immigration? When you go to his website, he doesn't even address it as an issue.
No, I lived in Fairfax County for 36 years and watched the transformation of VA into a solid blue state for Presidential and statewide elections. 2012 marked the first time ballots were in Spanish. One third of Fairfax County is now foreign-born. NoVA now dominates statewide elections. Demography is destiny.
I'll be Voting My Conscience. Maybe that means voting Libertarian, or maybe it means writing in Evan McMullin.
I learned that trick from the RINO's at NRO.
You should watch the debate. Gillespie tries to distance himself from Trump.
Did you get the sense that Gillespie is a Never-Trumper? What I’ve read/heard is that while he isn’t a full-throated supporter like Corey Stewart is, he supports the President’s agenda and is looking forward to working together on issues that benefit the Commonwealth and America.
