The cost of housing has gotten so expensive that Representative Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) thinks that a monthly subsidy of $2,500 would help ease the burden for members of Congress.
He told The Hill on Monday that "I really do believe Congress would be much better served if there was a housing allowance for members of Congress," given that "Washington, D.C., is one of the most expensive places in the world." He said that "a $2,500 housing allowance would be appropriate and a real help to have at least a decent quality of life in Washington."
$2,500 a month comes out to $30,000 a year. That would bring the annual Congressional salary, which is $174,000, to over $200,000. It would also cost taxpayers "roughly $16 million a year for all 535 members" of Congress, The Hill reports.....

I have no problem with this as long as it stays within their own state. I didn’t elect them, I paid no taxes to cover their incidentals. If their state wishes to assist them then that’s up to the state, not the nation.

I would have a wage reduction with reductions based on non-defense spending cuts. I would have the formula set to take their salaries and benefits to Zer0bama, Zero, nada if they don’t meet goals that voters set. I would propose 50% cuts in non-defense cuts or no .govt employee gets paid.
Open squad bay barracks. A line of double bunks down both sides of the bay and a common latrine. An adjoining chow hall that serves basic nutrition and enough calories to get by, but nothing fancy. Dollar and a half limit spent per meal prep.
Politicals have to take turns on chow hall duty to fix the chow. Same with latrine duty.
The fam can stay in the home state home town. The politicals don’t spend all that much time in DC anyway.
That and 50 bucks a month spending cash and we’re still paying out way more than the value we get out of them.
Do they have Motel 6 in Washington DC? Stay there.
It’s only a problem for the first few weeks - until the kickbacks start rolling in. :)
Next time there’s a Dem majority in Congress (God forbid) they should just pass a law that DC landlords have to rent to them for $100 a month.
Problem solved!
Congressman Bruce Poliquin sleeps in office. He is single (widower), workaholic and returns to Maine most weekends.
Bet many congressman are gaming the system and making much more.... This guy’s probably one of the few who’s not cheatng if he’s asking for help
Politicians should be audited Each year to see how much their net worth is climbing and how they achieved it.
I hear the army has been experimenting with newfangled things called “barracks”.
Boooo....
I totally agree. There’s no need for Congress to be in Washington except for special meetings and of course the State of the Union speech. Technology allows them to simply stay in their district.
Um, excuse me, but has this guy lost his mind?
First it was Trump bashing, now he wants us to pay for housing? Crooks already get free housing, they just need to go turn themselves in.
Last I read, Chaffetz was angling for a job on Fox. Hopefully, they can keep him on his meds. They are not without experience in that arena.
People like Dirty Harry and others should have been investigated,
And give Chaffetz the distinction of being Permanent Latrine Orderly
But you have to keep the Congressional barber. All hair cuts in thirty seconds or less.
There is a much easier solution for the republicans. Cut the hell out of government and watch tens of thousands of government employees and lobbyists move out of D.C. Voila. Lower rents.
Exactly. Not only that but we ought to be relocating some gov’t agencies to regions outside of the Washington DC metro area.
I found one for you Jason Capital View. Only $23 a nite hows that?
