Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kent.) said on Wednesday that he believes President Trump has settled into the conventional Republicanism touted by rank-and-file party members, like Jeb Bush and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.).
"What the administration is doing, not only am I comfortable with it, but I think the vast majority of Republicans in Congress feel that this is a right-of-center presidency, which is what we had hoped," McConnell told Reuters in an interview.
"If you look at what the president is actually for, it strikes me as indistinguishable from what a President Jeb Bush or a President Marco Rubio would have been advocating: deregulation, tax reform, repeal and replace of Obamacare, judges like Neil Gorsuch," he added.
McConnell also said that he's been open with Trump about his disapproval of the president's "tweets and extracurricular comments," adding that he and Trump talk regularly and share an open line of communication.
Though he acknowledged that Trump is "disinclined to take my advice on some things."
"He knows, as you all know, that Ive not been a fan of the tweets and the extracurricular comments," McConnell told Reuters. "I said last week we could do with a little less drama."
Trump has been quick to weigh in on controversies regarding his administration, particularly about ongoing federal investigations into Russian election meddling and possible collusion between his campaign and the Kremlin.
McConnell said that he and Trump are united in their policy priorities, such as tax reform and repealing ObamaCare, and described Vice President Pence's role as a liaison between the White House and Capitol Hill as "serious value-added."
"Its been really helpful because members feel like they can go over and whisper in his ear about whatever their particular problem is, and something will be done about it, because theyve kind of elevated it to a higher level," he said.
Is he really this dim-witted? If so, perhaps that is why nothing gets done in the Senate.
I think he means this as a compliment and to calm down others.
He’s wrong, though. Trump really wants to drain the swamp.

Guess he’s auditioning for a spot on Kimmel or Colbert.
Turtles must be blind.
Sounds like he is trying to reassure the deep state that the deal Trump gets is the same deal he would’ve given Yeb.
The only exception is that Yeb wouldn’t have demanded anything near what Trump wants and will get.
McConnell (R-Kent.)is an idiot!
Whatevs. Trump is still to right of all those weak-kneed RINOs.
Do not mention Donald and Jeb in he same breath.
I think this is supposed to signal the party line - that Republicans should pull with President Trump because he is one of them.
Might mean that the Uniparty is getting scared that their skeletons will come out to play and they are going to placate the administration and save face by pretending that they are all on the same page.
What an outrageous insult to our great President!!!
It truly is exasperating to have Paul Ryan as an inept speaker of the house and McConnell’s lethargic “leadership” in the Senate.
Wish there was a way for President Trump to replace both of them pronto!!!
Yep, when DJT killed the TPP he went full Establishment.
what an idiot. He really thinks he’s being helpful but Rubio, Bush and pansies and wouldn’t have the guts to do half of what Trump has done. Can you imagine a Jeb! budget?
Don't parse the words people, just go with the tone flow.
“I said last week we could do with a little less drama.”
What an arrogant ass.

Same exact message. Well, this, but that.
Never accusatory, never anything. Just "a message".
