In this exclusive excerpt from their fascinating new book “Shattered,’’ political reporters Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes take readers inside Hillary Clinton’s world on the night that changed her life — and the nation — forever.

Hillary’s communications team decamped to the Javits Center in the Hell’s Kitchen section of Manhattan, where preparations for her victory party were being made. The venue, which would fill with Hillary aides, donors, friends and well-wishers over the course of the day, was chosen in large part because of its distinctive feature: a glass ceiling. If everything went as planned, it would be the glass ceiling of the presidency that lay shattered under Hillary by the end of the night.

A handful of key aides remained in the campaign’s Brooklyn headquarters for Election Night, but the top brass, including [campaign manager] Robby Mook, John Podesta, and Cheryl Mills, joined Hillary and Bill Clinton on their floor at the top of The Peninsula hotel, a five-star facility a block from Trump Tower. The Clintons had their own suite, and the rest of the floor had been rented out for staff workspace and for aides, including Podesta and Abedin, to have private bedrooms.

At the start of the night, the Javits Center was electric: it had the buzz of a debut performance on Broadway. Outside, a seemingly endless line formed down 40th Street, near artists who had sketched Hillary’s portrait next to Obama’s and vendors who sold buttons....

I still think, and will probably never be able to confirm, that Obama was secretly delighted to see Hillary go down in flames. While he did not want Trump to win, the upside to him is, as at his age he’s got decades to wield power in the Democrat party if he chooses to, because without question this election marked the end of the Clinton era.

Plus, I think he hates her guts as much as the rest of us do.

The easy predictions everyone made, including on FR, before NOV 8... easily 226-161 before anyone lifts a finger, 18 states for her, and 20 for him...

The Huffington Post's prediction for the final results, flipping Indiana, Missouri, and Utah to Hill, as well as 11 of the 12 that were not an easy call back in October (only Alaska would go to Trump, says Ms Huffington)... A huge victory for her, historic even... giving her 401, bigger than any margin of victory in 28 years, much bigger than her husband's 370 and 379 EV's...

The actual results...

Of the 12 undecideds, NEV, CO, and VA did actually go for Hillary.... but expected wins WI and MI flipped on her, and all nine of the remaining "undecided" states went to Trump.

How's that? :)
