President Trumps decision to shake up his National Security Council by removing a prominent military leader in favor of political adviser Steve Bannon is worrisome and a radical departure, Sen. John McCain said Sunday.
Trump signed executive action Saturday adding Bannon, who headed the alt-right Breitbart web site before joining the campaign, to his core security council while removing the Director of National Intelligence and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staffs.
The appointment of Mr. Bannon is something which is a radical departure from any National Security Council in history, McCain (R-Ariz.) told CBSs Face the Nation.
The role of the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has been diminished, I understand, with this reorganization. One person who is indispensable would be the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, in my view. So its of concern.
McCain also took issue with Trumps travel ban on travelers from seven Muslim countries as a confusing process. Listing Iraq on the travel ban could stoke anti-American sentiment when Iraqis have been working with the US to root out ISIS....

That the people of AZ keep returning this daft old man to the Senate is what is concerning.
The reason McCain is on tv so often is, the media knows they can count on him to slam conservatives, and/or President Trump.
He’s an “easy sale” in those areas.
They claim he was once a “hero”, but he’s sure denigrated that title over the years.
did McCain vote for 0bama’s ban on travel from these same countries a few years ago?
As for the National Security Council, Trump is president, elections have consequences. McCain should just shut his mouth, and sit down.
“...a prominent military leader...”

If this was a prominent military leader appointed by Obama, it was nothing more than a “perfumed prince” (thank you, David Hackworth)
If McCain is concerned, then it was definitely the right thing to do.
Exactly. The fact that McCain is an elected official and has access to national security information is more concerning to me. At least Bannon won’t go running to the media like McCain and stab the president in the back.
What’s wrong Juan, you upset that your ISIS butt buddies in Syria can’t come to America anymore..maybe you can give your buddy Al Baghdadi a call and see what he has to say about all this
It could be worse, Trump could have added McInsane to the NSC instead. It sure does look like we dodged a bullet with McStain in 2008.
Anytime mcgrahamio come out against trump I know trump made the right decision
Last I heard, Trump was putting too many military people in charge. My head is spinning.
McCain lost.
Why does anyone pay attention to anything he says?
Clearly the right thing to do, then.
We did.
America would be a glowing, radioactive crater if he had won.
I worry Mrs about McCain being let near there.
Corrupted incumbents can often cobble together a majority between crony pubbies and rats.
Senator McCain needs to realize that every time someone sticks a microphone in his face, he doesn’t need to answer.
Likewise, just because he lost in 2008 and Trump won in 2016 does not mean he has to attack the President at every opportunity.
I have been thinking that for years.
who the heck listens to anything McCain says besides Linda Graham and the liberals?
