Byron York: As debates near, forum shows potential Trump advantage

NBC's "Commander in Chief Forum," held Wednesday night aboard the USS Intrepid in New York, was the closest thing to a debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton until the real thing on Sept. 26. And it showed an advantage Trump might have when the two meet face-to-face: she has a record in government to defend, while he doesn't. On that score, Trump, at 70 a newcomer to politics, seems new, while Clinton, at 68 a veteran of decades in public life, seems, well, not new.

The format of the NBC forum, in which the two candidates were separated by only a commercial break, put that contrast into higher relief than ever before.

Clinton cited her experience right out of the blocks, when moderator Matt Lauer asked her, "What is the most important characteristic that a commander in chief can possess?"

"Steadiness," Clinton answered instantly. "An absolute rock steadiness, and mixed with strength to be able to make the hard decisions. Because I've had the unique experience of watching and working with several presidents …"(continued)

Clinton has the advantage of being able to point to30 years of abject failure. Trump simply has nothing at all comparable to point to.

The only way Hillary wins the debates is if Trump comes out looking unreasonable. As long as Trump walks away in most peoples mind as a reasonable human being and not the racist, crazy man the left and the media try to spin him as, He wins.

Doesn’t matter if Hillary wonks up every answer and crosses every T and dots every I... she cannot win no matter how well she performs... she has a functional ceiling of about 42/43 points... THe only way she wins is if those who are up in the air about Trump decide to stay home or go third party....and keep him from hitting 44% or more.

People that are not decided are not folks, other than some first time voters, are never going to be swayed to vote for Hillary... She’s a known entity, and anyone who is going to support her, already has committed.... FOlks will be turning in to watch Trump.. and if he comes off looking reasonable... then they will by and large decide they can vote for him... That’s the long and short of it.

The Beings that control hilLIARy clearly told her when to stand up last time, and filibuster, so as to avoid having to stop talking and answer another question. The sudden way she leaps from her seat shows that.

I thought Lauer’s question about Executive experience somewhat unfair.

Lauer's question was a natural one for a sycophant of political nobility and worshipper of our political Elitists. Trump clearly isn't part of the "in-crowd" so he can't be any good, right?

Although I thought Trump handled things very well, I do wish he had emphasized that the office of the president is essentially a management task. You run a big organization. You make big decisions. You hire the right people. You make sure that the people you hired are performing the job. Trump has excelled at this more than just about anyone you can think of.

Sure, Trump hasn't send a Marine division in to die on the beaches, but I really don't see how that's a necessary job qualification for a political candidate -- it narrows the field pretty severely.

Huh? Was addressing that to Hillary “Hard Choices” Clinton. Trump has made harder choices during this campaign than she has in her career. She makes no choices. She is a phony. Obama in truth was a very weak candidate, she was weaker. There is no way this country will vote for her. The media has concocted fake polling numbers to keep the election close.

This will be a 50 state landslide for Trump.
