Niall Ferguson says the Republican presidential nominee has emerged as a champion of the disgruntled lower classes, who though poorer and less educated than the nations elite are legion
In his brilliant and prophetic 2011 book, Coming Apart, my friend Charles Murray identified the stark social division that is defining this years US presidential election. Murrays book was unabashedly about the state of white America. The white population of the US, he argued, is more polarised than at any time in the past half century. On the one hand, there is a cognitive elite, who are educated at universities like Harvard and Yale, marry each other, work together and live in the same exclusive neighbourhoods. These people are politically more liberal than the national average, as well as much richer.
On the other side of this social chasm is a new lower class: white Americans with nothing more than a high school diploma, if that. In a masterstroke of exposition, Murray vividly localised his argument by imagining two emblematic communities: Belmont, where everyone has at least one university degree, and Fishtown, where no one has any....

Yep... keep calling the people, who keep this country moving, names. That’ll keep from voting... /sarc
The constant attempts to pigeonhole voters are as tiresome as the half dozen polls issued every day.
That's the thing about Trump detractors....they look down their noses at ALL Trump supporters.
I can attest to that. Trump won me over a year ago. And I'm a woman with a BS and MS in physics.
That whole meme re ALL Trump supporters are stupid, un/ill educated at inferior schools, and poor, is beyond ridiculous!
Most of my friends are college educated, fully employed and economically comfortable. I don’t have any rich friends, but I also don’t no anyone who lives in ‘Fishtown’. We are ALL enthusiastically supporting Donald Trump!
You have the DC elite, screwing over America for their own gain. They get your vote, head to DC and do nothing to help. They throw out niceties, platitudes and promises that consistently fail.
A huge portion of the population is sick of it.
Enter Trump.
Dang! Are you married?? :)
Errr...make that KNOW, please!
Yes. To a PhD in EE. Once a Democrat, now Independent. But he’s on the Trump Train.
I think he didn’t quite get the divide right.
On one side is
(1) government employees,
(2) university faculty and employees (which because of student loans are basically government employees),
(3) transnational managers of supra-national corporations,
(4) blacks as a racial bloc,
(5) 2/3 hispanics as a racial bloc,
(6) other immigrant populations,
(7) single white women who want Uncle Sugar Daddy,
(8) true-believer communists and socialists and
(9) other groups and persons who benefit from the status quo looting of america, e.g. many lawyers.
On the other side is:
(1) the portion of America which has significant roots in this country, including most white people and
(2) most law enforcement, military and veterans.
The problem with elitist libs is that they just think they are smarter than everyone else. Yet they make the stupidest policies that accomplish exactly the opposite what they were attempting to do. But sometimes they are just duplicitous.
What they really mean to say is “you are too stupid to get by on your own so we will figure things out for you”.
It may be too much to ask they get their comeuppance this fall. This is truly a pivotal election. If Hildabeast gets elected, we have seen the end of the USA.
The Hispanics in my neighborhood and my South African wound care nurse are for Trump.
I loved that line from Goodwill Hunting.
Ferguson is a smart guy but he’s Scottish and here’s what he and everyone else who is not “one of us” misses: it’s not just those in the “silent majority” who are going for Trump but their extended families and friends. It doesn’t matter if you’ve got a PhD and a good job, if your kids are 30 and living in the basement, or you fight with your wife constantly about sending money to her sister and brother-in-law who are blue collar folks working two jobs and still in danger of losing their house. Sooner or later you’re going to hear Trump’s message and realize he can fix this, while Hillary is a big part of the reason they are this way to begin with.
This election is NOT about race. It’s about competence, honesty, the Bill of Rights and Constitution, and borders.
To be fair..some “shite trash” support Trump..hope they vote for him and not stay home/trailers. :)
“The wages of decades of smugness is Trump.”
I forgot to add muslims and homosexuals in group 1.
Trump has the potential to do significantly better than Romney with legal Hispanics and blacks.
I think if Trump can get >35% of legal hispanics and >15% of blacks he’ll win the election by a comfortable margin.
On the other hand, the Dems will likely pull out all the stops on vote fraud.
You probably have it pretty much right, with the stipulation that there many blacks, Hispanics, and others who do not vote according to the “racial bloc” they are aligned with. The “identity politics” of the Democrat party is built around this entire premise, which I think we are increasingly seeing is false.
