For the first time in this long election campaign, Republican Donald Trump has pulled ahead of Democrat Hillary Clinton in the RealClearPolitics average of national polls.
Mrs Clinton's double-digit lead, which she has held over the past several months, has vanished - and with it, apparently, Democrats' dreams of a transformational 2016 victory that would leave Republicans wandering the wilderness for a generation.
What happened? A closer look at those poll numbers offers some clarity....

Alex, what is "because she's a lying, conniving, hypocritical hag, who reminds every guy of their ex-wife, and who's cackle sends shivers up most peoples backs"?
At this point, the Clintons are the closest we have to royalty - something the English are fond of, and still don’t realize a substantial fraction of Americans hate to the point of preferring revolutionary war.
Uh.. Because he was never behind to begin with?
Bingo!
The earlier polls with Cruz & Kasich & Fiorina & Rubio beating Clinton <-— ALL BOGUS
I'll help him here. America wants a leaders. Trump is, Hillary isn't. America sees problem and Trump does also. America sees Trump solving them, Hillary writing a position paper. America wants jobs. Trump is a job creator. Hillary has never created a job. America wants honesty. Well we know the answer here. Trump speaks his mind straight forward. Hillary is lair.
Leave you tony Georgetown condo and go to West Virginia, go to Alabama, go to Michigan, go to Iowa. Talk to real Americans. Do your job, not write junk that you hear at cocktail parties in the beltway. Better yet if this is the best you can do, go back to England.
Pathetic.
Yeb! would have been a gracious loser.
He probably has his concession speech memorized.
Too bad his $130 million primary campaign couldn’t buy him the nomination.
This is the first time since the last amnesty that the Cheap Labor Express has not gotten the amnesty candidate they paid for.
There is this, however - somebody apparently knows that something unusual is happening:
But here's where we cut-and-paste those words of caution in every Trump polling story published since last autumn. The normal political rules don't seem to apply to the man. Just because things have happened one way in the past doesn't mean they will play out that way this time.
And here's where the analysis fails: the zeitgeist isn't a function of Trump, it's Trump that is a function of the zeitgeist, and if it weren't he, we'd be looking around for somebody else similarly anti-establishment. It's really very simple: the country is fed up with the establishment, with the political correctness, with the powers that be, and that includes the media commentariat and the parasitical class of "experts" who are apparently too thick to realize that they are not managing the problem, they are the problem. If this sounds like shades of Ronald Reagan, that isn't accidental.
Maybe it's just the fish not noticing the water. Maybe it's the mood the country was in in 1775 that everybody thought was just another little temper tantrum. Whatever it is, the media don't appear to be getting it and watching them flounder is becoming part of the fun.
Easy one. Because the GOP has a candidate this time that actually wants to win and is trying to do so. In other words, voters have a reason to go with their gut and abandon Hillary which was not the case months ago when it looked like it would be Jeb.
Lol, true enough, but few in the MSM were making that point when polls showed Hillary and Bernie both defeating Trump by double digits, and even Kasich faring better in a general election than Trump.
This guy asks the right question but refuses to answer it, devolving into another who is ahead in the horse race story.
Because things are finally Getting Real.
Trump or Hillary.
Pretty stark choice.
