Former Bay State Sen. Scott Brown said hes heard Mitt Romney the most prominent champion of the Never Trump movement believes the presumptive GOP nominee will beat his likely Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.
Mitt Romney Ive heard from many sources that he has said, indirectly or directly to them if its between Hillary and Trump, Trump wins, Brown said on Boston Herald Radios Morning Meeting program. So well see what they do in the privacy of the voting booth.
Brown was a protege and longtime political ally of Romney, a former Massachusetts governor and the 2012 Republican presidential nominee until this year, when they have both gone public with wildly divergent views of Trump. Brown, currently a New Hampshire resident, threw his support behind the celebrity billionaire while Romney has been a vehement critic of Trump.
Brown also said he thought it would be in the best interest of current Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker to back Trump who the governor publicly has said he would not vote for. The former senator, who represented Massachusetts from 2010-2013, told hosts Jaclyn Cashman and Hillary Chabot that the Republican governor would get more attention from the White House if Trump is in the Oval Office.
If Charlie picks up the phone and calls Hillary, hes going to get a call like three months later, Brown said. If he picks up the phone and calls Trump, he is going to get a call within minutes and thats going to be helpful when you need those disaster funds or you need those educational funds or special needs funding or you need some type of consideration for some legislation thats important in Massachusetts, and thats the difference. And thats something he and they are going to have to reconcile.
During a January stop along the campaign trail, Trump referred to Brown as a potential vice presidential pick who would be right out of central casting. Brown, who lost a New Hampshire Senate bid as well as his final Massachusett race vs. Elizabeth Warren, today shrugged off a question about whether he would be interested in a spot on the GOP ticket and instead endorsed South Dakota U.S. Sen. John Thune for the job.
I feel very strongly that John would be fantastic, Brown said. Johns from a smaller state but I dont think states matter anymore. What John provides is he will carry the entire central part of this country, the left coast and the right coast, and he is that bridge to the establishment where he is so deeply respected on the left and the right, inside and out.
Brown also dismissed Warrens late-night Twitter slams of Trump as completely irrelevant.. The liberal firebrand took to Twitter last night after Trump clinched the nomination with his Indiana win, firing off a series of anti-Trump tweets saying the billionaire built his campaign on racism, sexism, and xenophobia, and proclaiming there is more enthusiasm for Trump within the Ku Klux Klan than the Republican Party.
Warren punctuated her string of nine tweets by saying: Im going to fight my heart out to make sure @realDonaldTrumps toxic stew of hatred & insecurity never reaches the White House.
Well, first of all, what she said is completely irrelevant, Brown fired back this morning. It doesnt matter. She had her chance to make a difference. She hadnt even bothered to endorse anybody so its just a continuation of her phoniness and her inability to make decisions.
Warrens endorsement was hotly sought after by Democratic contenders Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, but the senator who enjoys huge popularity among progressives in her party has declined to back either candidate during the primary season.
the coalescence is beginning.
Yeah, well, presumably Romney thought he would beat Obama, so I’m not sure how much store we should set by him.
Me, I’m pulling the lever for “R”, can’t imagine what would make me not do that, but I’ll be writing in Scott Walker in my meaningless NJ Primary.
He will beat her...her collapse has already begun.
Scott Brown is a good surrogate. He was arguing with that Katie Pavlich and not taking any crap from her.
Romney & Brown are both RINOs, but Brown isn’t a wimp like Romney. He even said Clinton had a man problem. Most RINOs wouldnt touch the Indian outlaw issue with Liz Warren both Trump & Brown do.
Anyone with a hat in the ring now realizes that Trump speaks for millions of us who hate the D.C. establishment that has lied to us and totally lied to us for several election cycles, we want you bastards to TRULY represent us or be gone....
And that terrifies him.
And anything that furrows Mittens' brow is sweetest, thickest gravy, where I'm concerned. ;)
Trump will win the general with around 53-55 percent of the vote.
Wasn’t the election about not wanting a bridge to the establishment?
It was nice acting of Romney pretending he was against Trump.
They’ll pull Hillary after the convention (i.e., after Bernie is disposed of). They need a STRONG CANDIDATE to run against Trump, and Hillary is far from strong.
Their plan had been to take out Trump in the Primaries, in which case they’d be running against a typical Republican ‘gentleman’, meaning that Hillary’s weaknesses wouldn’t get exploited and that the Republican would, once again ‘lose, but at least lose with dignity’.
Trump didn’t go along with the plan...
Romney better start raising funds for Trump. Trump Foundation gave millions to Romney in 2012.
I hope so. I think the battle we’re leaving behind us is nothing compared to the war we’re looking at though. The Clintons will be throwing their ill-gotten globalist money around-lots of it.
Amazing how that seems possible now, but impossible a month ago!
Romney goes the way the wind blows.
Hillary Clinton is so very weak. Her people know it! Remember how those Dem debates were scheduled at 10:00pm on Saturday nights? Or versus a football game? That was not at all by accident — Hillary Clinton does not show well.
Trump should (and my bet will) insist on not just two or three presidential debates, as per tradition, but on one debate per week! Hillary, you say you are up to answering that phone call at 3:00am, do you have the stamina to debate once per week?
Hillary and her campaign staff will be in a frenzy figuring out how to parry Trump’s challenges and keep her completely hidden from public view from Labor Day to Election Day!
No. It was about not letting the establishment uniparty lie to us about what is really going on, while holding all of the power and rewarding its insiders at the expense of hard-working average people. It was not about complete revolution and shunning everyone who ever has been part of the establishment.
I hope he swallows his own magic underwear.
